In 2008 DearThyroid.com was born. Though I, Katie, worried that the fruit of my loins, Dear Thyroid was a ridiculous notion that lived inside my thyrocious mind, to my surprise; I was categorically wrong. As letters began drizzling in, I devoured every word (through tears), realizing I wasn’t alone and neither were they we’d found each other.   I treasure(d) every letter that entered my inbox. I was and remain astonished by women’s courage, devastated by some stories and inspired by others. I felt and still feel that each is a gift.

Our letters to our thyroids represent a moment, or many moments in our lives where we pause to engage our thyroids in a discussion. We bleed what was taken or given, destroyed, or revitalized, sickened or healed, onto the page and give life to our stories by sharing them with other women on DearThyroid.com. What better way to celebrate that than by anthologizing it in print?

As you know, this year, Liz Schau, Writer, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis patient, exquisite, genuine, kind and Kick Her Thyroid’s Ass Queen, joined Dear Thyroid as co Editor-In-Chief.

Liz feels, in her words, anthologizing the letters we’ve received is exciting because books have a funny way of making our ideas and stories tangible and lasting.   Our thyroid experiences — good or bad, amazing or terrible — deserve a permanent place in typed script on paper because they’re our lives and our lives are that important.   For all the times many of us have been asked to stop talking about this experience of disease, and for all the times we actually have stopped, words and ideas in books rarely stop speaking; they keep speaking.

This year, it was decided that in 2010, we will be publishing the first Dear Thyroid Anthology ( © All rights Reserved. WGA #1357150) and every year thereafter. Women and families, who have submitted letters to Dear Thyroid, will be invited to be included in our print anthologies.

I have found your site and love it. I suffer from nodules on my thyroid and it has me on a roller coaster.
The doctor and I are working together to try to figure out the best way to treat it, but it’s been a long process.
Thanks for giving me an insight into your experience.
I don’t feel so alone with my battle…

  5. Allison says:

That is MEGA exciting. I need to finalize my letter and get it in! I’m still figuring out what slant I’m going to take on it, but I’ve got the content nailed down.

You know, Miss Allison. Well, first, did I ever tell you how much I love your Avatar? If not, now you know.

Second, we can’t wait to read your letter and we’re so excited that you’re submitting one. Please know that you can write as many letters as you want and we PROUDLY post each on DT.

We’re super excited about the anthology, too, it’s going to be great.
