Dear Thyroid;

I realize this letter is long overdue as a means of demonstrating my appreciation for years of faithful service.   I confess to taking you for granted.

In fact, I must admit that until my beautiful, brilliant daughter Liz was diagnosed with thyroid disease, I didn’t comprehend the immense role you played in my health and daily existence.

Watching her struggle with the smallest daily chores and activities when in full blown thyroid crisis, has given me a new appreciation for your contribution to my happiness on a daily basis!

Even now when she has battled to regain a more normal health status, my daughter must deal with annoyances that I never consider when I roll out of bed each day.  I am sure this is very cliche, but I wish I could donate my typical thyroid to her.   If only we were lucky enough to have a second gland that could be transplanted into a loved one struggling with the ravages of thyroid disease.

More than anything, I wish I could spank those medical professionals who diminished her by negating the symptoms and making her feel crazy.   As a parent, I felt so powerless to intervene in,  her situation because I had such limited understanding myself.

But, as her mother, I feel such pride, as she has fought back to reclaim her health one day at a time.   I see her reaching out to others to share the lessons she has learned in hopes of sparing them, even a little of the pain she’s faced.

So, thanks, thyroid, for being one of those old friends that asks nothing in return for all the kindness shown in a lifetime.   I will try to show you more appreciation in the way I live each day, thanks to the wisdom of that brilliant daughter I referenced earlier!
