Dear Thyroid,

I miss you so much, life without you has been absolutely horrid. Please forgive me as I had no idea just how important a gland you were, until you were gone. It really wasn’t my fault though. I hope you can understand that. It was a side-effect of the radiation treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma that damaged you so much. I do so appreciate you hanging in there for as long as you did. I know it must have been hard to keep doing your job after so much damage was done. I know you did your best to hang in there as long as you did, but boy oh boy do I wish you were here. You and I made a great team and I miss you more than I could ever express in words.

Since that surgeon cut you out almost 5 years ago, I have not been able to get myself regulated on medication. Not to mention the 25 lbs I gained after you left me. Without you, I haven’t been able to lose it.   How foolish of me to think that a series of replacement medication could possibly accomplish what you did.   You were expert at your job and knew exactly how to regulate me. These pills are a far cry from what you did for me. I truly have not felt good since you’ve been gone and I wish things could have been different. If I had known the radiation treatment would cause so many long-term side effects, perhaps I would have decided against it. I was young, and just followed the doctor’s advice. You can’t blame me for that, can you?

I don’t even know where you are right now. Is there a thyroid utopia? You were so good to me for so long that you do deserve to be in utopia. I do wish there was such a thing as a thyroid transplant, as I would be first in line for one. I don’t want to hurt your feelings regarding a transplant. Even if they could do it, you will always be my first thyroid, my first love. I will never forget you and what you did for me.

Thanks again for hanging in there for so long. I’ll love you forever and,  will miss you until the day I die.

Love always,
Jeannette Laframboise

  2. Kathy says:

First of all, thank you for having the radiation therapy. If you didn’t and you weren’t here, we’d never get to meet you through your wonderful letter. One can feel and see through your words that you were and still are a damned good nurse. So caring and empathetic. Keep writing the words that will bring you healing. Too bad there isn’t adopt a thyroid or rent a ‘roid to get us back on the path of feeling better. Til then, let’s stick together on this rocky road and help hold one another up.
Happy Birthday, Jeannette, and…don’t forget to make a wish!!
