DEAR THYROID^TM

Dear Family Thyroid Glands,

I can almost forgive you for the fact I inherited my hyperthyroidism from my mother, but what I cannot forgive, is that her problems deprived my brothers, sister and myself from having a mother who was, and still is far from what people expect from their mothers.

Hey, I think I can forgive you for turning my hair grey prematurely. Fortunately, it was quite cool to be different in my teens, and I didn’t really mind when spiteful remarks were made.   I enjoyed being different and the ability to add food colorings to my hair when I wanted to add a little more difference to my appearance; that was really fantastic.   (Please note the sarcasm directed towards you at this juncture).

Who the hell wants to be so different from every other teenager when they are agonizing over what to do with those hormonal changes that usually happen to teens?

I know now that it wasn’t her fault either, as she also inherited it.

Nor can I forgive you for causing my baby brother to have a thyroid storm at the age of 36, which caused his cardiac arrest, subsequent RAI treatment, two operations to stop and re-start his heart and the subsequent loss of his job, health and happiness.

I can almost forgive you for going into overdrive and causing me so many health problems, including the thyroid storms at the age of 23. Having to endure the RAI, which left my body fat, hurting and totally wrecked, and even the hysterectomy I needed at the age of 40.   But, what I can’t forgive is the fact that you took my children’s mother away from them and subsequently my grandchildren’s right to have a healthy grandmother.

Nor can I forgive you for passing on this terrible infliction to my daughter, which made her lose the twins she was expecting this February, when she was 5 months pregnant, which has caused so much sadness in all of our lives.

If you remember, you also robbed my cousin of the ability to have children.   Bet you were real pleased with yourself for that?! Yes, you know which one of you I am directing this towards.

I cannot ever forgive you for robbing an entire family of the chance to live normal lives, either because they are sufferers, or the supporters of sufferers.

For myself there may now be a really good chance for things to change and I am addressing you personally,

My dear Thyroid; I now have a new doctor, and for me things do look much better, after 30 years of this treatment.   You are going to have to watch it now, because he is prepared to go into battle with you.   We are a team who will fight you all the way, along with the help of natural thyroid hormones, what do you think about that? I don’t expect you will answer me, but you better prepare yourself to meet the battle.

As a little footnote, you all may have noticed that my memory is slowly returning since my treatment began. One day, perhaps it will be fully restored, who knows?
