Mike Wilson, Thyroid patient, Thykus, Hykus, Thyroid patients writing hykus to their thyroids, Dear Thyroid, thyroid disease support

doctor says the pill
is as good, but thyroid you’re
irreplaceable

alarm clock ringing
dreams and hopes for the day but
I am out of gas

awake at 4:10
running laps around the block
my! dose! is! too! high!

there is a treatment
for hypothyroidism
this makes me lucky

why does my back itch
all the time, I should not ask
that is how it is

some patients have scars
from their thyroidectomies
clutch my neck in fear

I have much more work
than energy to do it
must go to bed now

(Bio) Mike has the nobody-knows-why-type of hypothyroidism for at least the last 9.5 years.   He’s only 36 now, but feels 63

    Mike I loves it!!!! 🙂
Sadly, I feel the same way. I also get up at around 4:30 to head to the gym. It is terrible trying to get my big butt out of bed!

Thank you for making me laugh. Love your Thyku’s. We’ve got to keep on laughing!!!

My back is always itchy lately too. I almost did the same thing and looked in the mirror to see if something was there. Instead I went crazy looking for the back scratcher I knew was around the house somewhere.

I had no idea it could be related to my thyroid…Geez, what doesn’t this lovely gland of ours affect?

  7. amy says:

Wow! Very good! I didn’t know other people with thyroid disease have itchy backs too! I’m not so crazy after all!

  8. Curious Carol says:

Itchy backs? When I have an itchy back it’s due to an outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, but there are little bumps, so you can tell the diff between dry-skin itchiness or DH.

DH is a symptoms of celiac disease, by the way. Anyone with thyroid disease who has itchy bumps that pop up (usually symmetrically, both legs…both sides of the head…etc.), itch like crazy, come to a head then get scaley before they heal into a purple spot that does, thank goodness, usually go away…they need to get tested for celiac disease.

DH is also diagnosed separately by a biopsy to circumference of the lesion by a dermatologist. Make sure they get the very edge, though, or the test won’t work.

We, as autoimmune patients are also prone to every other damned autoimmune disease: psoriasis and eczema among the many many lovely possibilities:

    Hard to trust myself
    Treasonous body, scared to
    be my own best friend.

  9. Pam says:

I don’t know about itchy backs but I did have a period when I was first ramping up on PTU where I was constantly super duper itchy (even more so than normal). It was everywhere, and lasted for a couple of weeks. Thymentia is preventing me from articulating why we get so itchy. If I remember, I’ll let you guys know.

    Another great poem, Mike!
