Dear Chris,

I know you will never forgive me not only for abandoning you, but also for leaving you with cancer.   You’re still waiting for remission and learning to deal with not having a metabolism and the complications it is causing with your diabetes.   I truly am sorry, but I had to do it.   Hopefully in time you will see that I actually saved your life by giving you cancer now.

When I found out that you were trying to start a family with your newlywed husband, I knew I had to step in.   He wasn’t the one for you and I knew that if you were to get pregnant, you’d never leave him and give yourself a chance at a happy life.   You thought you were pregnant that August morning you arrived in the ER and you cried when they found me instead.   I’m sorry, but I had to do it.

I know that life seems so unfair right now, starting a divorce while dealing with health problems and another surgery, but I did this so you can have a fresh start and find the man, the love and the life you deserve.   Despite how you feel right now, you do deserve all of that and I wanted to do my part to make sure it happens.

I know you feel like you’ll hate me forever, but someday, when you have found the right path in your life and you are happy, you will forgive me and possibly even thank me.

Until then,

Your thyroid

(Bio),   Chris’ thyroid is participating in two research studies to find earlier detection methods for papillary and follicular thyroid cancer.   The little bitch has three tumors containing papillary, papillary microcarcinoma, and follicular variant papillary cancer.   Thankfully, she was stopped in her tracks before she could infect other areas of Chris’ body.

What a lovely letter your thyroid wrote to you, I mean what gland would know how be do marital guidance, detect cancer and save your life in many ways, maybe truly one day you will thank it for not letting the cancer spread, or the fact your marriage wasn’t what you expected.

What a touching and moving letter. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Geez- I’m finding myself rooting for the “little bitch” for saving your life; that’s a first for me!!! I’m beginning to realize that life isn’t about “fairness” or “why me”…it is what it is and there’s always something we learn from it … this experience sounds like it was what you needed to give you that cosmic 2 x 4 whomp on the head to get over that marriage as you have way too important work ahead to be dealing with a less-than-perfect relationship—I can see why you’re involved in 2 research studies-wow! 3 different Cas at once-bet you wish you weren’t so “special”
right now—but I’m extending my hand for you to hold thru those rought patches. Can you feel my fingers reaching for you? Just close you eyes and squeeze tight.. We’re with you all the way…you’re AMAZING!!!!

My heart goes out to you. Maybe all our thyroids are trying to save us–I have certainly changed my health habits due to it. I hope you have family support nearby, if not you have us!

Chris, you are amazing! I am so in awe of you right now! You are my heroine of the day today. I am going to find one crappy thing about my day today and turn it on its ass and make it awesome, somehow, just like you did with your thyroid.

    Thank you!

Chris – I read this and thought “I don’t remember writing a letter to Dear Thyroid!” I too was trying to start a family and I too ended up dealing with divorce and cancer treatment at the same time. Here is what I can tell you from someone who has been there – it sucks. But you can do it. It is not always easy. But you can do it. People will not understand and question your decisions. But you can and will make it through. And while I am not to the stage yet of thanking my thyroid for the cancer, I am to the point where I can say that so many more good things have come out of all of this than I ever thought were possible. YOU CAN DO IT!
