I’m taking a little break from veganism this week because we have another special giveaway in store for you!,   Can you believe it???   The holiday season is making us feel a little generous, what can we say?  I’ll go more into proteins and amino acids later, but for now, let me refresh your memory a bit; an update, if you will.

One of my very first articles on this here column was about the ground work that has influenced all other nutritional readings, research, and ideologies I have come across: the book, The Yeast Connection and Women’s Health, which, as my article went, “is not necessarily about vaginas!”   That’s because yeast, while we associate it only with infections of certain nether-regions, actually covers and coats our intestines, eyes, mouth, ears, skin, and so on.   We are a host to many tiny organisms, a yeast balance or imbalance (called dysbiosis) being one of them.   Sickness can result when these little bacteria get out of balance due to a traditional American diet (high in chemicals, sugars, processing, grains, allergens, pesticides, and dairy) — they can flood our bloodstream, cause infections, and produce toxic waste as a byproduct (that’s not gonna make you feel good at all).   Also the chlorinated water we drink, the birth control pills we’re on, and the antibiotic courses we’ve taken on and off over our lifetimes cause them to imbalance.

For me, this little idea isn’t in the periphery — something that’s no big deal, like, yeah, take a probiotic and it may help.   This is the way I live my life, the way I choose everything I eat and drink because leaky gut and candidiasis was and is a real problem for me, after a lifetime of being ignorant to these little bugs. My endocrine and immune systems suffered as a consequence.   The healing is slow, but cumulative and miraculous.   And I think this problem is much more pervasive than anyone is allowing us to consider.

But what does this have to do with a giveaway?,   Well, I’ll tell you: our friends at Jarrow, the wonderful supplements company, are going to be giving away some of their probiotics to one of our lucky readers.   Now the reason I’m so excited about this is because I use their product myself (I go with the yummy chewable kids variety, because that’s just how I roll) and begged them to do a giveaway for you, our dear readers, because I know you will love them and love the good health their products return as a result.   And just what are those benefits again?: weight loss or weight maintenance, and high immunity; a balance of good bacteria has also been linked to a whole array of good things like less depression and anxiety, clear skin and nails, less bloating and constipation, fewer headaches and migraines, fewer cravings for sweet foods, heightened concentration and memory, and so many others.   Think of a balanced gut as your first line of defense against all ailments.

The best part of celebrating Thanksgiving was with my father-in-law. He is 93 years old, sort of deaf, and this is the first year in over 70 that he has spent the holidays with my mother-in-law (who is in a nursing home). The joy on that man’s face when we picked him up was precious. It filled my heart (and broke it at the same time). I cherish this man and we know we won’t have many holidays like this down the road. It was the most special Thanksgiving ever.

  2. I had much less fatigue this week, which made me SO happy and allowed me to enjoy the holiday that much more. [Guess the Levoxyl is finally starting to do its job.] I love my New, Improved Self… Now with Less Narcolepsy! Also my dad drove 1.5 hours just to be with me for turkey day, which meant the world to me.

On Thanksgiving Day this year my side of the family and my husband’s side had dinner together, and it went extraordinarly well. No one had to try to get to two places in one day. It was so much more relaxing and unrushed.

Liz, I am so glad you are talking about the gut and the importance of probiotics. So much of our health depends on how well our “gut” is working, (i.e. immune system regulation and serotonin for starters). I write about dysbiosis, overgrowth syndrome and Clostridum Difficile (plus other infectious etiologies related to the intestines) every single day. People are housebound literally by these illnesses and they are as common now as the common cold. If you go into a hospital these days you are lucky if you don’t come out with C. Diff. I would not go into a hospital without upping my probiotic before, during and after a couple of weeks, and during times of travel or when a course of antibiotics is needed.

I am emailing to five people, posting on FB and on Twitter.

    Thank you, Liz

I was happy that I was able to keep up with my volume of work at my job _and_ manage to prepare Thanksgiving dinner without forgetting anything or burning anything.

Today, this morning in particular, I was having a terrible horrible no good very bad day. I was anxiety ridden all night, and this morning was no better. I kept self talking, telling myself that I could make the choice to feel better, feel happy.. it was not working. I was making myself crazy. I had to go to work and smile at everyone there, trying to make their day better. Two persons, one a staff member, the other a volunteer came in to work. I hadn’t seen either one for several days. Each of them gave me the most incredible hug and told me that they were happy to see me. These two persons love me unconditionally and I immediately felt that. My spirit was at once totally uplifted and my sadness, anger and anxiety left and I felt a light come on in my soul. I’m home now. Alone with my thoughts..and I am still feeling good. How healing the hugs are.

Oh, Liz, how I love thee. Anything immune system related warms the cockles of my heart. Over 70% of our lymphoid tissue is in our intestines–GALT (gut-associated lymphoid tissue). When you consider how we totally disrespect our GI (Americans, not theeps, we’re more enlightened), it’s no surprise we are the least healthy industrialized nation. I’ve been taking Nature’s Way brand probiotics (in the refrigerated section) for a bit over a year now. Somewhere I read that Bifida bacteria is better than Acidophilus for reducing intestinal gas buildup, but my current supplement is a mixture.

Now, I didn’t have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving–very trying times. But, now 3+ weeks GF, and it’s the first time EVER that I did not have any abdominal pain while traveling/vacationing. It is definitely a cause worth celebrating.

My papa, who is 82, came up from Arizona. I live in WA. I had a wonderful Thanksgiving with my family! The best part was my Uncle John came up with Papa and surprised everyone! Only my older brother who picked them up at the airport knew. My daughter played with all her cousins…it was fun. And now we are home and get to sleep in our own beds tonight. Yes!
Kathy, Yes! Hugs from the ones we love are so healing and wonderful!

  9. Uplifting – went to a family Christmas Tree farm operated by a husband and wife team who’d been married for 60 years! I’m interviewing the wife for a story and ask if her husband would do the interview w/us. She says sure – and gets out a walkie talkie and says. “Farmer’s wife to Farmer – the newslady is in the barns.”
    I loved this.

    RTing this now as well.
