(Written by, Robs, Thyroid Cancer Survivor)

We are all here today to pay our respects to a most formidable foe. An individual who has penetrated every aspect of my life. It has been both my burden, and my constant companion. It is the proximate cause for a great deal of pain and suffering, but it has shaped my life and personality in ways that nothing else could have ever done.

I refer of course to my thyroid cancer.

It is hard to believe that it was just five years ago, on February 16, 2005, that it made its presence known, and we started our journey through doctors and insurance. In its wake, it claimed my thyroid and numerous lymph nodes, some tear ducts, a vocal cord, and more blood samples than humanly imaginable. It is a sigh of relief to know this reign of terror against my body has subsided, and I can move on with my life.

My dear thyca, I hope that as you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you know you are the only evil, and you shall not be missed.

May you be gone, now, and forever.

Robs, I feel this statement true for me as well. Although, I have not had cancer but live w/ Hashimotos. That is a very REAL statement!

Christine has said it so well! How could I top that?! I agree w/her completely!!!

  5. Amy – I’m so sorry you feel this way, too. Great show of support for Robs. You’re a honey.

PS: HypoG – Love your support for Robs.

  6. Beautifully written, Robs. Cancer is such a horrible evil. I hope that you will find something beautiful in it’s wake. I’m so very thrilled that you’re cancer free, that your body, mind, and spirit are rid of this evil. It truly makes my heart happy.

    xo,
    Joanna

So nicely written!! I’m sorry you have had such a hard road. We thyroid cancer survivors and all survivors stand together. It is a horrible disease but has sure brought some great people into my life!! Getting support from and giving support to others helps all of us. Good luck one and all–we’re in this together!!

    Thanks,
    Tracy

Tracy – I love your attitude, it’s refreshing and woefully true. There’s a kind of beauty, I think, in knowing that, even though we have to endure disease/cancer; we don’t have to go it alone.

Thank you for your comment and great support.

    Thank you all SOOOO much!

It’s been over a month now since I wrote that letter, and I can’t even begin to tell you what its like to come out of the thyca haze. I genuinely didn’t think there would be much more than a sense of relief… but really, so much has changed in the last month that its like being a different person. I’m actually putting together something that resembles a life… I’m taking golf, tennis and surf lessons… the fitness challenge i’m doing really started kicking in (ie i’m down 25 lbs)… i’m waiting impatiently for the peace corp physical eval to be done… and I’m doing a competition for a sweet backpacking summer job (shameless self promotion… see my blog… go vote, only 2 days left).
So yeah… its been an awesome month, and for the first time in a long time thyca hasn’t been front and center on my brain. 8-D

  11. Well done Robs! It is so therapeutic to write about it! Thanks for sharing.
