Dear Thyroid:

Today while at work, I was sitting at my desk as usual, doing my work. A co-worker came by needing some assistance with something in my area of expertise. As he observed my leg bouncing up and down on it’s own, as happens with nervous, excited, or anxious people, he asked “Have you been drinking coffee today?”

I hardly ever drink coffee. And I usually steer clear of caffeine as it gives me unnerving heart palpitations. But I knew where he was going with that question.

I replied “No, I haven’t. I’m just feeling normal today. When I was young and all growing up, I was just naturally fidgety. All the time. And then I got thyroid disease and I went all **blah**.” At that point I just sort of melted in my chair dramatically. But then I added “But today, I feel normal, the way I used to before I got thyroid disease.”

So thyroid disease, pphhtthhhhtttt on you!

Mike

Mike is 36 years old, and has had the nobody-knows-why type of hypothyroidism for over 10 years now. His philosophy about thyroid disease is to, um… … uh… … … huh? …?

Thanks for the sunny side up kind of look. Here’s to all of us feeling “Normal” once again.

  2. Joyce Ann says:

You said it! I love when we can kick that blah state of being to the curb and be as “normal” (or abby-normal) as we used to be! 😀

Mike…I don’t feel as bad now that I am not the only one with nobody-knows-why type of hypothyroidism. Do you think it would be different if you actually could say what type you have? I love your letter. I do the same thing with my leg. On my few “normal” days it can go a mile a minute. Thanks again for your letter!

  4. Robyn says:

Yeah! Here’s to restless leg syndrome!!!!

JK–glad you are feeling “better” today.

  5. Mike, I love your letters. I love your outlook…it’s infectious.

    Mike,
I agree with Joanna – it’s infectious. And cheers to feeling “normal”! We get two really positive stories in a week! This is awesome!

Hey! RLS is no laughing matter, I have it and it’s Very painful when I happen to get cramps and they occur often. Mike, I love this story! I’ve battled with Hypothyroid off and on since 2000. I was taking Synthroid for it, but after a while, they told me I didn’t need it any more. Now I’m back to feeling really Blah and having the “we’re not sure what’s going on with you” syndrome. My blood tests are ranging normal for the thyroid at the moment, but I have a lot of Fatigue and inflammation. Anyone have suggestions to get the doctors on the right page here? I’ve been to every specialist imaginable so far!

  8. Joanna says:

Oh, and not to mention being a human pin cushion.

Way to go Mike!! Joanna, I just wondered if you have tried a glueten free diet!! or at least cut down.I have been Hypo for 7 years now, ok longer but it went undiagnosed for at least 3 years, but when I eat bread and have a high glueten week I feel exhausted, achey, and my whole body feels inflamed! I become very irritable. I was like that last week, and I felt awful. I cut out all breads this week and I feel so much better!! I’m eating lots of protein and fresh veggies, hope this helps!

  11. Thanks for the smile~I am picturing your thyroid rumbling it’s lips and giving us a raspberry! Damn thyroid……….blah….blah….blah…….
