Dear, Dear Thyroid Community Members,

Liz Schau is no longer with Dear Thyroid. While I am very sorry to see Liz go, I am grateful to her and for everything she’s done for Dear Thyroid. She’s an outstanding individual, a brilliant nutritionist, and writer.  I think she’s changed many of our lives for the better. Liz has provided us with a new lens to view nutrition and healing through. We are lucky to have benefitted from her expansive knowledge and passion.

Thank you, Liz, for everything you’ve done for the Dear Thyroid community. We will miss you. We appreciate you. We wish you the world of continued success in your every endeavor.

We all know how difficult change can be. After all, our respective diseases forced us into life reinventions that we never asked for. As if that wasn’t enough, our glands and glandless selves continuously take our minds and bodies on unspoken, never agreed to joyrides; ensuring that we know our minds and bodies are not our own. That being said, let’s continue being the change we seek. To quote an old post I wrote a year or so ago, “If we are going to win the war against autoimmune diseases and cancers, we can’t do it individually. But, we can do it together. Remember where you came from: a doctor’s office, a diagnosis and a life that was turned inside out and upside down.”

Change can also be positive. Not only have we re-launched Dear Thyroid Next Generation (Yo!), we’re also welcoming two new columnists to our community, Melissa Travis, a sassy, warm, fabulous comedy writer enduring multiple chronic autoimmune conditions, among other things. Please welcome her, and her new column “Chronic Snarkopolist”. Additionally, we welcome a wonderful, witty, kindhearted non-fiction writer, Nicole Wells, a Graves’ disease patient. She’ll be penning “Fat Thigh-roid Woes”. Welcome aboard, Nicole. Because nutrition is such a vital part of our healing process, a nutrition columnist will be joining us soon.

Next Generation Dear Thyroid has a Newsletter, you can create your own profile and a Dear Thyroid Gravatar, get involved in spearheading awareness and change for thyroid diseases and cancers. And, you can now submit, not just written Dear Thyroid Letters (drum roll, please…), Dear Thyroid Video and Audio Letters! Poke around and check out the site. We also have a suggestion box, so don’t be shy about sharing your input with us. We want to hear from you.

We have a greater good that we want to achieve, catching each other when we fall – celebrating each other’s successes – sharing our stories with each other – finding our way back to ourselves – community outreach – finding a cure and creating awareness for thyroid diseases and thyroid cancers.

The next generation of Dear Thyroid endeavors to continue achieving all of that, and more. DearThyroid N-Gen is more interactive. We will continue to make our community even stronger.  Together, we will persevere, and grow.

Finally, a quote that I think is apropos to this post: “It’s not about personal gain, not about ego, not about power… it’s about the “us’s” out there. Without hope, the us’s give up – I know you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. So you, and you, and you… You gotta give em’ hope… you gotta give em’ hope.” – Harvey Milk

Love,

Katie

New site looks great! Clean and easy to navigate. I have an idea… to use a butterfly pin (in leiu of the popular ribbon) and/or temporary tattoo to raise thyroid awareness. How are the bracelets acquired, could we work with the same company to get butterfly pins made.
Hmmm… we also need a butterfly emoticon… can any body figure out a way to make a butterfly emoticon? Awareness and education makes for progress in getting effective treatment! Thanks for all you do!

  6. Sue, You are a dream boat. I love your ideas, they are fantastic. I’m on it. I’ll figure out how to create the butterfly emoticon and butterfly pins. You are a genius, woman.

Thanks for your insight and input. These are FABULOUS IDEAS. SO EXCITED. LOOOOOVE IT.
