(Written by Susan Frybort, Hypothyroid Patient)

Dear Thyroid,

I have been coexisting with hypothyroidism for fifteen years since the age of 29, though had demonstrated obvious symptoms throughout my twenties.

The poem I wrote reflects the physical and emotional conflict  I experienced in the early years of my thyroid disease.  I endured a laundry list of medical problems for a full decade in the fight to regain health and balance. After becoming aware of what I can do personally for my symptoms and taking charge of my health, I can report that I have improved significantly. Like everyone else, however, I still have my ‘days’.

Sincerely,

Susan L. Frybort

Sleeping Butterfly

Sleeping butterfly, you rest in my neck,

How I wish I could soar with the luster of flight!

Your unhurried moves have rendered me inactive,

How you struggle yourself for one bit of might.

Deceiving butterfly, in secret you whisper

To conspire then steal my spirit and health.

In the fight I grab for words and clarity,

While you strike me again in quiet stealth.

Rude butterfly, swelling up in my throat,

Growing quietly plump are your sluggish wings

Silently shoving memories from me,

While I labor to swallow and recall simple things.

Icy butterfly, shivering in the cold despair.

Your body seeks heat, though you repel warmth and friends.

Within the reclusive and frigid lowliness

We huddle together and wait while it ends.

Idle butterfly, grounded in a lazy slumber,

How you were once spectacular just like me.

Now colorless and dull you fade in time

Along with my flightless vitality.

Nervous butterfly, so anxiously we tremble,

Despondency claims your thoughts gone astray.

Your blank stare fills an emptied mind

As the color drains from our mood and array.

Feeble butterfly, I pity you

And cheer wobbly attempts to lift and go.

Though weighted down by your silent disease,

Incurable, imperfect, you suffer so…

Just like me.

  1. Beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing. I am so glad that you have found release from your symptoms (at least some days). You are SO spot on. We are all as imperfect as our glands.

  2. Suzanne, this is a brilliant poem. You are obviously a very talented writer. It describes so well what you and (sadly) so many of us are going through.

    Hugs, Sarah

  3. Bloody hell. I must be retarded today! I can’t believe I spelled your name wrong and you’re even one of my Facebook friends. The shame! So sorry, Susan!

I love your poem. It rings so true for me too. I am so glad you are past the worst of it. I am still trying to “fix” the complications of so many years undiagnosed. Thanks for sharing.

Sarah – We’re all human. You crack me up. I miss hearing ‘the shame’. I say it all the time. Anyway…

Love the poem, too. I wish it wasn’t as true as it is, and for so many thyroid patients.

    Thanks for lending support.

Lori – I’m glad you mentioned fixing the issues as a result of misdiagnoses. OMG – do you believe how time consuming THAT is?!

I hope that Susan writes/submits more of her thylicious poetry.
