Butterfly Paragraph Submission, Written By Bee
My Relationship with butterflies post-diagnosis :
You know, you can try to pin a bad rap on butterflies because they have the unfortunate similarity in shape to my f’d up thyroid gland.
But so can people with lupus. Isn’t a “sign” of lupus a butterfly facial rash? It is beyond my ken why one of nature’s most beautiful creatures, so delicate, so free, should have to carry the weight of thyroid sufferers’ problems on their teeny tiny little shoulders (do they have shoulders?). I just feel sorry for them.
Before my illness, I just accepted them for the beauty of their being. Now I feel like advocating for them. Hell, we thyroid patients end up advocating for ourselves because no one else is stepping up to do it for us. But who’s looking out for the butterfly? It’s just not fair, dammit.
While we’re marching for our cause or speaking out to make our diseases known, I think I’ll focus on the metamorphosis of the butterfly. Isn’t that what thyroid sufferers ultimately hope for; to change into a healthy body, to grow into wholeness? Never stop hoping for that chrysalis to encompass us. Never stop hoping to emerge from that sheltered state of growth. For once we emerge, we may find true joy in the fact that we’ve been to hell and back, have survived to talk about it, are able to help others get through it, and end up finding true beauty and a joyful carefree spirit in ourselves.

Bee, I am in love with your butterflygraph. The concept of butterflies getting a bad rap and wanting to advocate for them, is such a cool image. Love it.
