Butterflies, coldly described in the dictionary as “an insect with large wings“, but they are more than that, they are beautiful and delicate creatures. I defy anyone to watch a butterfly flitting around the flowers and not smile.  They are a symbol of those care-free summer days, when life is good, the sun is shining and the days ware long and happy.  Metaphorically, they also symbolise the thyroid gland, something which we here are all familiar with, also viewed as delicate, and when functioning correctly, it has its own beauty, working away seamlessly in the background of our lives.  I can only assume my own personal butterfly mistakenly consumed nectar from a poisoned flower, as she became toxic and grew ugly, and no longer resembled the silent, exquisite butterfly she once was.  She’s gone now, her life was cut short by the surgeon’s scalpel, and her replacement isn’t nearly as graceful or elegant.  Fly free my beautiful butterfly.
