Today, someone asked me why Dear Thyroid was so important to me. After pausing for a moment, because let’s face it, I could’ve given him a chaotic dissertation without substance, given my passion, I calmly explained:

Have you ever had the privilege of participating in a community of bold, uncensored voices exclaiming courage, sorrow, humor, love, gratitude, desperation (for answers), and so much more?

He’d never had this opportunity, I continued:

Though I don’t know these voices, I know them. We share a bond so deep; rooted in disease, and a collective wish to invoke change. To, quite literally re-brand the face of thyroid diseases and cancers. We seek wellness, robust and full lives. We are determined to get it.

With every snippet of content, each individual fills claims space in my heart. And, yes, blinding rage, to be a part of the movement that seeks to improve the lives of thyroid patients. This community has taught me that anything and everything is possible. This community has made me want to fight harder for change. We want every patient to receive quality care, financial compensation when in duress and, and, and A CURE.

DT’r has become a verb. I am part of that verb. Verb = action. I am the luckiest girl on the planet. I have learned more from each DT”r than anyone else, about myself, my disease, their disease and their lives. Together, WE ARE CHANGING THE FACE OF THYROID DISEASE AND THYROID CANCER. We are a thyamily, odd as that might sound, it’s true.

And, finally, it’s not about any single person; it’s about all of us as a global community standing together as a united front.

He was so inspired, he wanted to join our thymmunity. PS: He doesn’t have thyroid disease or thyroid cancer. He sure was proud of each person in this community!

Pandering To My Gland, please check out this Dear Thyroid Letter; it’s so empowering! When that moment strikes and we realize as patients that we are more than the sum of our numbers, it’s magic.

Excerpt: “So, you see, I do know that “levels” are only part of the story. You can’t fool me anymore. Doctors can get us through the life or death stuff. But, that is only the beginning. I have been doing my homework. I know my whole body better now.”

Linda – great letter! It sure doesn’t take long to realize it’s more than a numbers game but it would be nice if some day if conventional docs got on board about the realities of thyroid diseases. Glad you’re taking over and are the boss now!

Butterfly Paragraph Submission, By Linda Larson, stellar, beautiful, fabulous, and you must read it. I’m giving you a teeny excerpt. Don’t forget to vote in comments.

Excerpt: “Remember the Skin Horse in the book The Velveteen Rabbit?  Do you remember what he said?”

Toxins Everywhere, Slowing Down My Thyroid, by Dr. Sara Gottfried. She’s been guest blogging for Dear Thyroid for the past few weeks and she’s provided us with INCREDIBLE information about thyroid diseases and thyroid cancers. Check out her previous posts/archives, here.  Please catch this post – learn about toxicity in our environment, water and how to detox, among other things.

Excerpt:  “If your bod can’t keep up with the steady diet of toxins that we encounter, your liver metabolism takes a hit. Leptin rises. You become cranky, irritable and tired. You develop dark circles under your eyes. The main organ tasked with detoxification is your liver, and toxic backlog is a common diagnosis in my integrative medical practice. This is well-summarized by integrative nutritionist Byron Richards:”

    Dear Katie,
Thank you for allowing us to each speak to you from our own “chrysalis”, where we are trying to become something different. Perhaps something even better, as we share our various “miss tearies”, we are comforted at last by knowing we are not alone. We can be heard, even though we may not want to be seen. We are validated, as often in our own worlds we are not understood, worse yet, not even believed!
Thank you for your kind words on my essays yesterday, both Pandering and my butterfly essay. I have been delighted with the comments and the support this “club” if you will, have shared.
