I’m reading a book about how to deal with life after cancer. It’s written by a young adult survivor of metastatic colon cancer. One thing she focuses on is humor. Of course there’s nothing funny about living with cancer. There’s nothing funny about living with autoimmune diseases. There’s nothing funny about living with other chronic illnesses. But the author of this book I’m reading reminded me that laughing in the midst of our illnesses is important because it reminds us that we’re ALIVE. So, I thought I’d share a little humor with you today. If you don’t have anything to laugh about with your current situation, maybe you can laugh at what recently happened to me…

We all know how fast medical bills can pile up and we all know how LONG it takes to pay them off. The other week I got a letter from my radiologist’s office. They told me I was past due on my payment; total balance due: $0.00. Yes, my radiologist sent me a bill for zero dollars. So I called them. The financial lady I talked to, Destiny was her name, told me the bill was sent to me in error. Uh huh, ya think?! Destiny, darlin’, you must have a degree in accounting. So, I ended the conversation with her, hung up the phone, and had a laugh. And I felt better.

I hope you each and every one of you is able to laugh this weekend. Laugh a lot.

xo,

Joanna

Thyroid Cancer, When All Was Said; I Was Done, written by Justi, is an amazing, inspiring and life affirming Dear Thyroid Letter about her experience with thyroid cancer.

Excerpt: “The decision was the right one, I know that now. It’s taken me a while to really believe that my life is better without you. Changing my life, and redefining who I am as a woman wasn’t an easy task to complete. “

dear Justi,

Glad you are on the mend.

That was a lot to go thru all in one year……

I’m glad you have arrived at this place.

Can’t comment on #’s thing, I do believe different strokes for different folks…But do ask your healthcare advisor.

Everyone, I’m sure is just looking out for you, but I don’t want you to start worrying about the # stuff. Your body, you feel, you will know if you are off. Hurray for your success…..love the Good News xoxoxox Linny

Bringing Sexy Out of the Thyloset: Hannah, our second stop on the DEAR THYROID BLOG TOUR – Get to know Hannah and her wonderful blog. Read her post from the blog tour.

Excerpt: “Hannah was diagnosed papillary thyroid cancer at the beginning of this year and is chronicling her experience with honesty and HUMOR. The girl is hilarious. You don’t want to miss her blog post in honor of Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month.”

Fat Thigh-roid Woes: Bitch n’ Moan Fest 2010 – PLEASE READ THIS WEEK’S INSTALLATION OF FAT THIGH-ROID WOES—We can all relate to this shit in a big way. None of us want to go through this, and yet, we are or were, or will…

Excerpt: “I have a doctor’s appointment next week to get my thyroid levels checked ever since coming off Armour, and the whore on the phone told me to “bring cash since I have no insurance” with a touch of disdain in her voice.  Anytime I call a doctor’s office and tell them I have no insurance, they seem to take that specific tone with me – like I’m at fault for something here.  Sorry that I couldn’t DEMAND the underwriting department at Blue Cross take me on…therefore, I deserve to pay loads of cash outta my ass for blood tests and visits.”

    Hi Joanna,

Regarding your book about life after cancer:

Tumor humor is very very important. It uplifts your spirit, keeps the juices of survival flowing, and, above all, it lights up a smile where there is darkness.

If at all possible, try to see “some” positive, hilarious, or even only slightly amusing humor going.

    My 2¢ worth.

    Live long and prosper!

  2. HD, I agree with you. I’m a BIG fan of tumor humor!!
