For 30 Years You have Tortured Me, Thyroid; And Now…
Dear (butterfly) Thyroid,
Why do you do this to us? To me, to the people here in this group, and to any other person undiagnosed? All we ever did was look after you.
Your once beautiful pinkness has now turned to gray.
Your wings are spreading yet it feels, and looks, like the cocoon is still nesting in my neck. It feels like your wings are spreading more and more until my throat becomes sore.
My Endocrinologist – your Entomologist – is now taking care of you. You decided you didn’t want me as your only career. I am now going to get a biopsy on the 13th of September to see what is wrong with you and your little friends the nodules. Because of your selfishness, I might have cancer.
I don’t want to take care of you anymore. I had looked after you for 30 years, then on the 31st year (October, 2009), you decided to spread those now ugly, gray wings. Did you get sick of me? Is this why I’m now sick? I don’t even have any medication to help you turn back into the beautiful creature you once were.
Fly, ugly butterfly. You’re a literal pain in the neck. Please, be gone, or at least get better and turn into your beautiful, pink self again. The same goes for everyone else with Thyroid diseases/cancers. We don’t deserve this. Butterflies are supposed to be beautiful creatures. Live up to that image. Please.

Such a good letter. Do you feel a little better for writing it? I know it has helped me to write. How did the biopsy go? Do you and your endo have a plan? I have been through one biopsy/fna and it isn’t horrible, but not a lot of fun either.
So true that no-one deserves a thyroid that is a pain in the neck.

Here’s hoping those wings of your damamged butterfly were clipped. It’s utterly amamzing the havoc that it can do- on your mind, your body and your spirit.

I did feel better after writing this letter, but now after having the biopsy, I went back to feeling horrible.
It’s the first letter I’ve written. I’m not a writer at all.
My biopsy came back inconclusive. It’s been a week, and still sore and tender.
I’m being referred to a surgeon/specialist to talk about removal.
I hope you all are feeling good, and not suffering from thyroid pain. If only we didn’t have to go through this.
Julie, I went thru what you are going thru now.I had that little trouble maker out 2 years ago and feel much better for the most part. Not perfect but what can you expect. The last fna I had was horrible and inconclusive. But the biopsy came back fine no cancer just a very diseased thyroid.
After surgery I found that the swelling in my ankles went down. It is back but if I keep my feet up I can live with it. I get tired and of course my dr comment is your well medicated so you can’t have any problems.
