Dear Thyroid,

Here we go again! I was reminded of you today, as my 15 year old commented on the hair in his potatoes at supper time. I thought of you. Why did you have to leave me? That crazy “c” word, it is! You know, cancer is truly a funny thing. It changes how a Mom thinks of things in everyday life and it is also a daily reminder of how important those “tiny” parts of our body are. So, answer me? Why did you have to leave me?

Oh yes, you left because you thought it would be fun for me to take these little “purple”, sometimes “pink” pills everyday for the rest of my life, right? You also thought it would be fun to see how a Mom would react when her hair begins to thin. Oh yeah, you probably just think it’s due to this 40 something body. I beg to argue with you on that~ I noticed the funny hair thing in 1987! Yep, the first time I dealt with your removal.

I guess you left me to make me a better person, not bitter! You left me so I could see how a hair net actually works! And you have also made me more aware of my own body. I have learned how to be a strong advocate for myself when it comes to dealing with health insurance companies. The occasional body aches, as well as spacey thoughts are something I have learned to accept.  I’m sure you would deny any part of that, right?

So, why did you leave me? I guess I’ll keep asking that question for years to come~ But, you know what? I will continue to be reminded of your absence in the years ahead, but enjoy every waking moment! With or without you, Dear Thyroid, I am the winner~ you and cancer are not! I am proud of the fact that I am a two time thyroid cancer survivor and I have learned to adjust to my life without you, Dear Thyroid!
