A Very Literary Over from a Very Special dame
Once upon a time, there was a girl who had THE perfect neck.
So proud she was of this body part, she draped it often in pearls.
Very cute she was, but lately the pearls had been replaced
by scarfs. “Whatever is she doing wrapping herself up
during the heat of summer?”, her colleagues gossiped.
Until THAT day…THAT day when she ran out the front door,
like a hurricane, leaving her scarf behind.
Eek! It’s a scar! “Did she try to hurt herself?”, some whispered.
Others just stared, eyes questioning, but never daring to ask.
Horrified. Apologetic. Self-conscious. Ashamed. Yet, she discovered,
moving through these emotions, healing.
Reclaiming. Educating. Liberating. She slowly recognized the power
of the scar. She permanently tucked her scarfs away and once
again placed pearls around her perfect, but scarred neck. She proudly
became another face of thyroid cancer.

OVER-joyed and thankful for the succinct, powerful and accurate description of how thyroid-less patients feel when dealing with the very visible aftereffects of a thyroidectomy.

Not only do I have a scar where my thyroid use to be, but a large scar b/c my cancer metasized to multiple lymph nodes – I’m so proud to look like I kicked ass in a gang fight !
