BRINGIN IT’ for Thyroid Cancer – Oh, Those Stupid Questions
1. “Oh, well, that’s the kind of Cancer [ thyroid ] that doesn’t spread anyway !” ( Former nurse, my Mom who has Hashimotos)
2. “Your PET / CAT test didn’t really USE the word Malignancy, did it ?” ( Mom )
3. “You’re still very tired after the thyroid surgery, I really don’t see much of a change in you !” (Fiance`)
4. “So are you going to have to be on medication everyday now ?” (Friend)
5. “Don’t go to Memorial Sloan Kettering. . . . they wouldn’t know how to deal with Alternative medicine people like you. (Former nurse )
6. “So, they found a Malignancy in your thyroid, what are you going to do ?” (Mom)
7. “So, the PET/ CAT found a malignant cancer in your thyroid; are you going for a second opinion ?”(Mom)
8. “You are so lucky the Cancer was in your thyroid !” (Friend)
9. “So, let me get this straight, I’m doing a Fine Needle Biopsy under Ultrasound today & you are removing the thyroid anyway ?” ( Interventional Radiologist Doctor )
10. “Why are you using having thyroid cancer for 12 years & having a broken leg as an EXCUSE ?” (Fiance`)
11. “Don’t worry, you’re going to be fine, I know it’s not Cancer because your Aunt Marie had the same thing and it wasn’t Cancer, just adenomas !” ( Grandma )
12. “Hey Dad ! Guess what ? Now in addition to intoducing me as your ‘Daughter, the Acupuncturist ‘, you can introduce me as ‘Your daughter the Cancer Survivor’.”
“Oh, good here, talk to your mother” ( Dad )
13. { 2 weeks after my tattoo } “It’s not real is it ?” ( Live in Fiance` )
AND MY ALL TIME FAVORITE :
13. ” Why would you want to remove a Perfectly Good Thyroid ?” ( Dr. Christine Resta, Endocrinologist of NYC, July 2010 ) after viewing the report of my suspected malignancy on PET / CAT Combo which glowed to a 13.7 SUV MAX & turned out to be Variant Follicular Pappilary Carcinoma w/ Hurtle Cell Metaplasia !

Yup #13 tops them all, doesn’t it? — She (Christine, I don’t want to call her doctor) must have won her M.D. in some kind of Irish sweepstakes; or at a carnival booth at a life stock show. So sad!

Or the ever good comment so many of us heard: “You’ll be just fine, just take that little pill every morning! No problem!” … Grrrr, three years hence and the endo is still fiddling with my dosages, and I still feel like a zombie.

I LOVE IT!
Your list reminded me about something my cousin (“the doctor in the family” mind you – she is a hand surgeon) said to me…
During her residency, they would skip over patients who had thyroid cancer and/or thyroidectomies because “They were all the same and would be fine”. She then proceeded to ask me a ton of questions about my endo (who i love) because she has Hashimoto’s but doesn’t know anything about it!

Just change your Mom, Friend,Grandma to My daughters “quit worrying (the surgeon TOLD you he got it all)”. my husband.
oh and let’s not forget my doctor who told me in front of my
girls that I needed to see a psychiatrist. and the Endo who recently told me I was a mystery/enigma.
I am determined to find a good doctor this year. if I have to go across the country to do it.
Wow, I cannot believe that an endocrinologist actually said that to you. That is BEYOND VILE!
Apparently he can’t figure me out. he refuses to prescribe anything but levothyroxine although he did add Cytomel recently. I have friends who keep telling me to go to Mayo or John Hopkins. I am almost there.
