Oh, Endo Shemndo, When Will You Learn

Dear Medical Profession,

You suck.

For 15 years you have been testing my blood, increasing my synthroid and ignoring my symptoms.  How many of you have I seen?  Let’s see… Three general practioners, one rheumatologist, one dermatologist, and two orthopedic surgeons.  I feel like I should end that with “and a partridge in a pear tree” but I won’t.

And finally, after raising my dose of synthroid up to a whopping 250 mcg, it was a nurse practioner of all people who finally said “Gee, maybe you should see an endocrinologist”

DUH.

This endo had me get an ultrasound of my thyroid gland and LO AND BEHOLD – Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

So I’m not crazy.

My joints do hurt and I am tired, not just lazy as you all believe.  Oh, the migraines, thanks for letting me know they were also a side effect of this disease.  And the sometimes debilitating depression, I’m not making that up.  I’m not a whiner and I’m not a hypochondriac.

And thank you for making me feel stupid for complaining.  “Really, I can’t find anything wrong with your foot, there’s no stress fracture”

BUT IT HURTS!

Who would have thought that an MRI would show that I have arthritis in my foot?  See?  NOT IN MY HEAD.

And to my new Endo, I don’t know if I like you yet.  You look down at the chart the whole time I’m talking to you, and I leave your office feeling like a whiner all over again.  Thanks for the support.

Now I’m done because my laptop is crying as I have been pounding the keys with a vengeance.

Sincerely,

Kim (NOT the crazy, whiney hypchondriac)

I have no idea where to start … maybe Thank You.

I think I have been selling my problems short post thyroidectomy. i did not want to whine.

but i have gained 65lbs! and nothing has changed

the sythroid has made my levels look right on my labs

but i am still fat and my knees still hurt and i struggle so much with depression and fatigue.

and I have no clue how to start a PRODUCTIVE DIALOUGE with my endo.

at least I Am not alone

    Kim,
Excellent letter! I am sorry that you suffered so long and wish you good luck with this endo. My endo tends to look down and read while I am talking, but she is taking it all in and making notes.

Thank you for bringing these concepts to the forefront, people don’t know how much others are hurting when they throw words around like LAZY, HYPOCHONDRIAC, WHINER, COMPLAINER.Yet, aren’t these the same people who say, “Oh, if they only had come to me (us) we would have helped him(her)” after the damage is done to drugs, alcohol & the ultimate worst, suicide ! Others don’t have the courage to stick up when they hear these people being put down either to their face or behind their backs. This is just as damaging ; they are equally to blame for the ultimate outcomes. This disease has a voice. Because of you, who have courage, we now know it’s cue words !

Kim Great letter. Sorry you’ve had to suffer and not being believed you are not alone.

I Hope you can get stable with the new Endo it’s not in your head your symptoms are real.

    Thanks for sharing

    Kim,
It is amazing to me how alike all of our experiences have been. I wish for peace of mind and health. Together this road is easier.
