Dear HashiMaster:

You are and always have been the puppet master in my life since I was nearly 8 years old and yet you were so clever to slip through the fingers of so many practitioners, even though you were screaming “Look at me”, with practically every symptom in the book.

You fucking asshole, I’ve got your number; now showing up as euthyroid with an elevated TPO. Did you think I’d never find out, you sneaky son of a bitch? You will no longer outsmart or outwit me, or the practitioners.

I will fight you with every ounce of energy you have left me with. I will start honoring how I am feeling now that I know you are operating behind the scenes. I will no longer chalk this up to, “This must be how everyone else feels on any given day.”

Now that I know it is not in my head, but in my immune system. You’ve waged quite the war over the last 31 years, giving me the gift of:

  • Goiter
  • Vitiligo
  • Psoriasis
  • JRA/RA
  • Gall bladder disease with a Cholecystectomy to boot
  • Chronis Sinus Infections
  • Vertigo/hydrops
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Uterine Fibroids and possibly Adenomyosis
  • Fibrocystic Breast Disease with constant stabbing pains
  • Intraductal Papiloma
  • Hair loss
  • Weight gain, and a constant lifetime battle at that
  • Heart palpitations
  • Heart murmur
  • Nearly anemic, caught just in time
  • Dysmenorrhea
  • Metorrhagia
  • Menorrhagia
  • Occasional hemorrhaging
  • Lack of energy and motivation

Oh goodie, it has been like a gift giving holiday every day. You bastard, don’t even think about continuing to pull the strings. I bet you think it is hilarious that you kept me in the dark for so long; and that now I feel like a hamster on a wheel trying to make up for lost time, trying to get well.

Thank goodness I’ve assembled an army of practitioners who don’t have their heads up their asses; who will support me in my weakest moments and encourage me in my strongest moments.

You will not pull the strings anymore.

Oh and by the way, I don’t have my head up my ass anymore, either. I will continue to arm myself with information and educate myself about your wicked ways. I won’t stop asking questions, and I will no longer allow symptoms to be brushed under the carpet.

Whatever brain fog you think you can wing my way to conceal information, will not work and certainly do not think of giving me any more gifts. I’m through with your fucking charity, HashiMaster. I know who you are now and I’ll be giving you a few gifts of my own.

You better watch your back. You may financially bankrupt me, but you will not ruin my life.

Goodbye,

Goiter Girl

Bio: My name is Merrit. I am 39 year old female. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in March of 2010, but I suspect it was there since I was about 8 years old. I am Euthyroid with elevated antibodies and almost every symptom in the book. I was diagnosed by a Naturopath. I lean toward hypo symptoms, but occasionally there are a few hyper symptoms.

You totally nailed it!! I feel the same way you do. Good luck with your efforts. I to was diagnosed in 2000 after a miscarriage. For my return visit I saw another doc in the practice my md was out of the office. This guy saw my goiter right away and had me tested. Positive for Hashi. Why did no one else see this I thought I was just getting fat but it was so much more..come to find out. I just started really digging deep online and what I’ve been reading is scary because not one doctor gave me advice or told me any thing really just take this little pill and you should be FINE!! Yeah right!! Thanks for sharing.

Merrit- holy crappin crap. Finally, someone GETS IT!!! I have had these problems myself and it felt like nobody (medical professionals I mean) was listening. I’m glad you trusted yourself and didn’t give up. I did, but i’m getting to a good place now as well. Thank you for posting this!!

It was the Naturopath that I went to see for my issues with cycle who suggested we do an antibodies test… thank goodness someone started to look at the big picture.

What a great website… found you through Twitter and now I have some reading to do. Diagnosed with Hashimoto’s last summer with a lifetime of “normal” generic thyroid screens but myriad symptoms that couldn’t be explained away. The more I read, the more I think I’ve had this problem for a LONG time. Had I not pressed a Dr into doing more extensive testing, I probably still wouldn’t be diagnosed. So much to learn still.

    • Merrit says:

Karen always trust your gut and educate yourself about Hashi and related issues. Keep digging. Information is power.

Wow thanks for that – I have every single thing on your list and some more as well including horrendous arthritis now (obviously the AI connection) so I need surgery x3 (and thryroids love surgery). 30 years nearly after first presenting with difficulty swallowing and constant choking, extreme exhaustion and palps. Textbook.

Told I had ME, Fibro, anxiety etc etc….

just kept collecting problems from tumours to neuromas – but still just offer Antidepressants.

Diagnosed hypo 4 years ago and stupidly thought taking levothyroxine was all I could do. No info at all (I was taking every digestion med for severe reflux/hernia including lanzaprozole max dose)

Finally read up on thyroid after discovering my body temperature dropped regularly to 35 or even under and bingo, this year, two weeks ago tested for hashi’s antibodies. Positive.

I just CANNOT believe this is so common. I thought I was bonkers and lost the ability to recognise a pain.

Fingers crossed I can get back some level of health but at 56 what are the chances?

I am going to be one boring evangelist!

    Good luck to everyone x

Fiona, Hang in there. Remember that you are worth it and you are the only one that knows your body best, not some doctor that lives outside your body. There are a few items I left off my list, but I figured people would get bored with a longer list. Hashi’s is typically the last thing of the plethora of maladies to be diagnosed. Most doctor’s do not look at the big picture. You have lots of life left at 56 and I think you can have a shot at better quality of life. We all deserve a better quality of life no matter the age.

You rock! So glad you taking back the night and the day!

    Hi Merrit,
Good Gravy! I’d never even heard of Hashi, but am so glad you were (at last) diagnosed and are on the right track to treatment, awareness and health. Love your kick-ass, “I will take you down” attitude! Right On!!!
Stay strong, my friend. I am totally rooting for you to give this Hashi business the big heave-ho.
    love you,
    Renee
