Dear Thyroid;

Why must you ruin my life at my young age of 16?

You are so unpredictable know matter what dosage I take, you never seem to like it. I have lost so much because of you these last 2 years, because you have given me terrible acne and caused me to gain 30 pounds I can’t even get a guy to talk to me.

Not to mention my grades, who knows if I will even graduate next year.

What did I ever do to you to make you act like this?

Thyroid you and I really need to start getting it together. I know that getting 2 rounds of RAI really slowed you down but it was for the best, after all you used to get overexcited and almost killed us both.

I think if we work together instead of separately we will both be happier.

    Hi Megan, such a young person to be diagnosed with this condition. Please know that there are so many others that are also affected by Thyroid Cancer and that you are not alone. The hardest for me was to understand what this cancer was all about. Once you have that understanding, it will be so much easier to go on living with it. Aside for some of the hormonal changes that will really level out sooner than later, you will have your life back. I am 46 and have been a cancer survivor for the past 4 years. I have one daughter and she is 17, I would hug you like I do my very own in order to help you get through this difficult time you’re having. Have strength Megan, you will get through all of this and you will shed the pounds. Surround yourself with good people, regardless of your thyroid condition, don’t waste your time on these boys there are others out there that will surely embrace you! Hang in there Megan……you’re going to get through this.

    Megan,

    Sorry you are feeling this way. I read your post because sometimes I wish I could go back to age 16- when I DID feel ok. I remember things- focus with my eyes … feel my legs and arms- even my back – when I was much thinner. When I didn’t have a scar across my neck- oh I could go on. But what matters most is getting thru something even when you feel like crap- it might take a little bit longer than others- but oh well- think of the tortoise and the hare. (I have been both- haha!)

    Hope you feel better soon.

    megan, I too suffered from hypo at 16. I was diagnosed ith thyroid cancer between my sophomore and senior year of high school. At 20 I still struggle. Be persistent with your doctors. Fight for your patient rights. But also be kind to yourself. Find things that make you happy and do them. If you ever want to talk email me at meganmsims@gmail.com. I’d be happy to talk. Best of luck Hun!

    Megan,
    I know it sucks, it really does.
    I was diagnosed at age 11, and I just turned 19 two days ago. It still sucks now, even 8 years later. But over the years things did change as I realized I wasn’t that rare of a case, and there were things I could do to make it better. But I totally understand, and I’m in the same situation as you, still. Feel free to read my entry “Hashiteenitis” though it’s not much of a pep talk! Keep your head up. Things can get easier. I would say that 16 probably was the worst age for me considering all of it, so I can tell you that it really does get better. It doesn’t ruin everythinggg.
    Stay well.

    Please think positive…I had mine removed when I just graduated college… I had terrible headaches mood swings and depression since I was 12yo. It took 25 yrs for docs to find 6,5cm tumor attached to gland…it is a miracle I am alive today. I had the “old school ” treatments before thyogen. I had the worst trouble absorbing ant thyroid hormones years ago… i suffered from chronic hypo which later caused psychosis and I did crazy things which ruined my family…I have not seen my kids in 11yrs (just talked to my 16yo daughter this week for first time!) My family thought I was crazy back then . We did not know about how this illness if left untreated can affect brain chemistry (see thyromind.ca) Women often have a hard time do to monthly hormone swings compounding problem. The good news is that I am fine now! All the thyroid drugs and tests /treatments have been vastly improved! A good site for accurate data is allthyroid.org which is harvard school of medicines site. Also the weight comes off. Shalom!
