DEAR THYROID^TM

Shame:  I have you in spades.

Undress me and look hard.

Past the Ann Taylor pin-striped suit, beyond the Clinique makeup applied like artists’ paint

Everything so perfectly packaged to create an image of put together confidence and control.

Raw pain, sickness and loathing

Flow and ebb. Ebb and flow.

Last night I drifted into a fitful sleep, dreaming of the

Unicorn I won in 3rd grade. Her horn a twisted braid of pure, energizing color; her stuffed body a quiet comfort of grace.

Only, I have no horn to heal the sickness that has hospitalized me twice in a year.

Undoubtedly,
