Temple

she built a temple

around the butterfly

in the garden, it

hovered in the

vestibule, casting

shadows and

pushing small

bursts of air

like tiny gems

into the light

by day a monarch,

by night a luna moth,

troubled but

beautiful

she built a wall

to keep out

intruders

then she turned

her proboscis

upon herself,

taking all

that is sweet

from the

inside out

anything regal,

anything beautiful

anything that

remained,

stilled,

forever stuck

in her throat
