For 35 years I thought you were an excuse people used when they couldn’t loose weight. For 35 years I was oblivious to your influence in my life. For 35 years you silently did your thing, while I did mine. It wasn’t until I found out you were trying to kill me did I begin to appreciate what you’re all about. But now it’s too late. Now the doctors have taken you away. But you’re still not gone. No, you’re in my lymph nodes and who knows where else. Now I’m tired or wired with panic attacks and bipolar mood swings visiting me like hiccups.

What gives?

What will the next 35 years look like without you? Or will your leftover cells take what exhausted life is left in my bones? For 35 years I thought you were an excuse people used when they couldn’t loose weight. My bad.

For 21 years I was perfectly normal. I exercised ate mostly right. Enjoyed my size 12 curvy body. Only to have my thyroid revolt when I was a newly wed. I am now the person who can’t lose weight. I am a size 18 now. I gained 60 lbs in almost 6 months. Its time to screw our thyroids as they have screwed us. I hope you have far more than 35 years left in you. It’s an unsure bumpy road to travel. But all of us deserve to make it to the end! It’s so unfair and I’m so sorry. I’d give you a a big hug if I could. Keep holding on and fighting. You deserve to win.

Wow! So much said in so few words.

  4. James, we hear you loud and clear. I am so proud of you for writing and being a part of Dear Thyroid. You will read around on this site and see you are so not alone. I was taken by surprise just as you and it’s all about “forced learning”. Learning to live while managing your health situation and it really can be done….
