CAN DIFFERENT SUPPLEMENTAL BRANDS MAKE A DIFFERENCE…..

The past few days I have had those rare moments where I actually feel good and I say to myself, “oh, how I wish all my days could feel like this!” But I know better. I have dealt with the realization of having multiple autoimmune diseases, post stroke and post cancer. There are more bad days than good.  I just can’t help but wonder if the change in my calcium brands could have made the difference.  Could it be?  I mean, that is the only change I have made in my list of medications in the past week.

I like couponing, but with my illnesses, I, of course, am not one of those hard core couponers. I’m just not able to walk that far, so going to different stores is out of the question, but I’m here to tell ya I can get some good deals at my local drug stores. I had some really good coupons for Citracel, which enabled me to get 2 bottles for less than ½ the price of one bottle of OsCal that I have been using for over 9 years now.  So here I sit wondering…..could changing from one calcium supplement to another make such a difference.

Here’s hoping so. Since it is very important for all of us with thyroid diseases and conditions to take calcium, is there a brand that you favor? Have you found any that you didn’t like at all? Let’s see how many different types of calcium we are all taking.

I take OsCal and I’ve tried others too. I have had some make my tummy upset so I have to be careful. The oscal seems to work ok for me. I also take 2 Alive daily multi-vitamins. It’s a whole food vitamin. Hopeing to learn of other supplements that might help me feel better.

    • Kelly,
I found that there are 2 different types of calcium which are carbonate and citrate:
” In some clinical studies, calcium citrate has been found to be more easily digested and more readily absorbed than calcium carbonate. In addition, calcium citrate is better absorbed in persons who have decreased stomach acid.”
In my research I did see that if you get an upset tummy you need to watch out for the Magnesium that is included with some calcium supplements. That’s what is advised with people who deal with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
I would love to be able to incorporate a multi-vitamin but my oncologist stated I cannot take any that include Vitamin K which affects how the blood clots. I have yet to find one that has everything but vitamin K…..so we all are forever looking to see what could possibly help us to be as healthy as we possibly can be.

Thanks Anne! I wasn’t aware of the difference between citrate and carbonate. Since oscal is a carbonate form, then there’s a chance it could be causing stomach upset for me. I started noticing some nausea recently, and have read that sometimes people who have low stomach acid experience this. Maybe I should switch the citrate and see if I feel a difference. Thank you again for your wonderful insight Anne. I always enjoy reading your posts 🙂

        • Thank you Kelly. That really means the world to me. I do hope you see a difference in the citrate calcium and I am tickled pink that my research was able to help you out!! Keep me posted sweetie!
