Seventh Entry: Thyroid Literary Contest – Three Words of Encouragement
To me, the four words that best describe encouragement are empathy, interest, hope, and uplift.
Those who encourage have empathy for what others are going through. They take an active interest in the well-being of others. They give hope and do what they can to lift up those that they care about. This type of encouragement has shaped my life by making me realize I’m not alone in my lifelong struggles with Hashimotos. Those in the patient advocate community like Mary Shommon and Gena Nolin have shown empathy to thyroid patients, taken an active interest in their well-being, given hope of healing and done their best to uplift those around them. I don’t know where I’d be or what shape I’d be in without all of the information, support and encouragement!
