” (I )FOUND MY VOICE ”

when i was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, i decided to start a blog to document what was happening to me. i did this for myself- it was therapeutic to put all my feelings down in writing, but i also hoped that my blog would help someone else along their journey. i tried to write honestly about what was happening to me. i read all the books on thyroid cancer that i could, and i encouraged others to do the same. it took a little while, but when other people started reading my blog and sending back comments it was great! i found that i was more proactive in my own treatment- i asked more questions about procedures, treatments, etc. i also got copies of all of my tests, scans, and  ultrasounds so that i could have my own record of how i was progressing. i have made so many friends through my blog and i am thankful for their support and advice to me. this has been an incredibly positive experience for me, and i am glad that i was able to focus on the positive and not the negative side of having cancer.i love music- and i usually use the title of a song for my blog entries. i do not sing all that well anymore, but somehow through it all i have found my voice.

(Bio) hello, my name is bea young-smith. i was diagnosed with stage 3 papillary thyroid cancer in 2010, and had surgery to remove all of my thyroid, 2 of my parathyroids, and 11 lymph nodes. i also had treatment with the I-131 a couple of months after my surgery. i am a health professional, a mother, wife, and now a new grandmother! dealing with thyroid cancer has been a challenge for me- like it is for everyone. having cancer changed my life, gave me a “new normal”, and along with way……..
