Thirty-Fifth Entry: Thyroid Literary Contest – Three Words of Encouragement
NO MATTER WHAT: SMILE!!!
Hi, I was diagnosed with Graves Disease & hyperthyroidism in March of 2009 when my eyes were noticably protruding, but unfortunately it was later than my drs liked finding out, so there have been more complications. They tried steroids, radioactive iodine treatment, adjusting & changing my meds but nothing worked.
Unfortunately my heart wasn’t in that good enough shape for surgery, but my condition was worsening so my drs were forced to move forward with removing my thyroid fully. Right before surgery I had a mild heart attack so I was required to stay in the hospital until my thyroid surgery.
That, however, didn’t help either, then my eyes proceeded to cross, so now I have constant double vision along with hypothyroidism & have been living with those now for the past 2+ years & am super-sensitive to any kind of lights or wind or low temperatures. I had two decompression surgeries just last year, which were kinda rough on me & required overnight stay & this year hopefully am expecting to finish the remaining 4-5, though they have already postponed the first one which was supposed to be this month to May.
Long story short lol, I am very happy & content with my life & within myself so I really can’t complain. Without getting sick in the first place, I may have never known my true value & purpose in life & for that I am grateful 😀

Yes no matter what smile, it can always hide the way you truly feel. Good luck with your upcoming eye surgery I had eye disease too but never had or wanted to undergo corrective surgery for the lid lag or retention I was lucky no optic nerve involvement.. with time and good levels I was able to get my eyes to a better place I hope one day yours will be better too. You giot a vote from me and a big 🙂
Kudos to you J! It does feel better to smile than cry, but some days it’s not always easy is it? Thyroid issues are crazy, and they never seem to end. And then with everything else on top of it 🙁 You’re an amazingly strong person to have gone through all you have, and I agree with you that we have to find the positive side of illness. Yes, without getting sick we may never have realized our purpose & true value 🙂 I wish you the best of luck with your future surgeries…hang it there…you can do it!! Keep smilin ~ Terry 🙂
