Charity ride for Graves Disease and Thyroid Foundation of which I am organizing! www.greaterthangraves.com, Facebook at Greater than Graves’ 12, and twitter @GTGride.

The 2012 Greater Than Graves’ charitable bike ride across the United States is looking for sponsorship and donations for its cause. Last year’s inaugural ride was a great success and this year’s team has partnered with The University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center and is aspiring for great results. We hope that you can support us on our ride to give The Graves’ Disease and Thyroid Foundation and all Thyroid disease fighters a greater chance of success. Donations can be paid through our website at www.greaterthangraves.com

A few years ago my sister, Molly Driver, 26, began having health related problems which quickly became a distraction to her and her daughter’s life. Last year she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a potentially debilitating autoimmune disease. My sister’s life took a hard toll over the past few years, losing peripheral vision from the disease, causing her to take a medical leave from work and school with the threat of indefinite leave. Molly had to deal with the harsh reality of the disease taking over her life. She now is dealing with weight gain and risk of heart attack. This is when I decided that I had to do something to help.

On May 26st of this year, the 2012 team comprised of David Britton of Ashland MA, Keating Tufts of Manchester NH and myself, Elias McQuade of Manchester NH, along with many doctors who are in support of this great cause will begin a 59 day, 4080 mile bicycle trip from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California in the second annual Greater Than Graves’ ride. This event will benefit the Graves’ Disease and Thyroid Foundation (http://www.gdatf.org/) a 501(C)(3), non-profit organization. For more than 22 years, the GDATF has been a leading source of help and hope for those diagnosed with Graves’ disease, and I am excited that they have agreed to partner with us for this event.

From Elias McQuade, last year, his sister, Michaela Cui rode her bike across the country to raise funds for Graves’ disease.

Hope that you gain the support needed to continue your great cause. I have been living with graves for the last 6 years. I also feel that this has taken away the joys that I should have had with my 2 children (6 years and 2 years – my youngest was born with extremely high TSH, T4 and T3 levels and Drs and peadiatricians were not certain how to respond – My graves went to extreme levels in the 2nd half of pregnancy) and has impacted on nearly all parts of my professional and personal life. I also feel that is very little acknowledgement and understanding of the impacts by the general population.
