Dear Anastasia’s Thyroid: Part Two: Southern Healing
My Dear Thyroid,
I know, because we are bound in this same narrative, that this letter does not find you well. You have been stressed out, like me, about our impending relocation. Just the mention of our big move has made you wail and scream—keeping me up at night pacing in my head, sending your poor pumping neighbor (my heart) into spasms. And so, I’d like to take a moment to comfort you about this big change (and maybe, just maybe, my brain will feel some comfort, too).
You’re going to be just fine in North Carolina! They have all the things you love and crave, like sweet tea and hush puppies, paired with warmer weather, and there are some great friends down there, too “remember? And to keep you from od-ing on things like hush puppies and sweet tea (oh, the deep fried salt! The sugary caffeine! It all seems so good;until), I’m going to keep doing yoga (I know how shoulder-stand gets you in a blissful trance) and continue all the same breathing and meditation before I go to bed.
And while I know the thought of being 1,000 miles away from Mom might seem a bit daunting (she is your biggest fan, after all), we can call her and tell her about all your maddening symptoms whenever you feel like it. Just give me the signal and we’ll get her on the line.
Plus, I’m going to start school again. I’ll be writing lots of fiction for the next two years. Even though you love to dampen my process with brain fog, you can’t deny, dear thyroid, that you reap the benefits of my creative inspiration. When I’m crafting stories, I feel them swell inside and rinse you clear out like a dish rag. I’ve always taken that as a good sign.
So why the long face, butterfly gland? We’ll make it to North Carolina;as long as you don’t hit me with a surge of fatigue on the drive down. (Don’t even get any ideas.) I think this voyage is going to be good for us. Fear not, my dear thyroid. Healing is coming your way—drink it in, it’ll taste like sweet tea.
Your Hostess,
Anastasia

Anastasia,
i am absolutely in love with that last line, in the most writerly way. i get it so much. 🙂
Beautifully written! I also love the last line. This letter is full of hope. I wish you good luck on your move!
wonderful. i may not be full fledged southern, being from wv and southwestern va, but i DO know about sweet tea and hushpuppies. good luck you lyrical gal.
Dear Anastasia, your trials with alternative treatments are similar to mine. How easy it would be to sink into eating all those things we so love, comfort foods really, but which are detrimental to our health! Me, I love vodka, but no vodka… not for a while…
Anyway, the link to the post mentioned at the end of the blog, part 1, is not working. Can someone maybe relink it?
Good luck A. – will keep you guys posted of my trials with Homeopathy too.
