It amazes me how butterflies have invaded my life since diagnosis. I have a 5 year old daughter who is absolutely crazy about butterflies. She has several butterfly nets, and even catches moths because if it’s beautiful it must be a butterfly. I have a white polka dotted one in the kitchen right now. It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago though, that I found a parallel between my thyroid and butterflies. I was walking down our dirt lane and came upon a puddle that had started to dry, so it was very sticky mud. In that mud, there were several butterflies stuck, struggling or dead. In that moment I felt like I could identify with the ‘stuck in the mud’ feeling. My struggle with thyroid problems often leaves me feeling stuck. Hopefully I can soon regain my freedom again and feel like a beautiful butterfly.

    Hi Erica,

    It is interesting about the butterflies for me too. Lately they have been around me more often or perhaps I’m just noticing more. I was at the pool a few weeks ago and one literally sat on my magazine for like 30 seconds before flying away. A few days after that a monarch literally flew so close it was less than an inch from my nose.

    It’s close to 4 years since my thyroid has been removed and I never thought about or noticed butterflies until recently. I think it ties to the fact that I sort of ignored that I had thyroid disease and have just started to realize that I can’t do that if I want a better quality of life. It is interesting.

    Good luck in the contest and with your health!

  2. Hi Erica;

    I love your paragraph so much. The metaphor of butterflies being stuck in the mud paired with your feeling of being stuck in your thyroid story, was just gorgeous.

    Loved this! Great work, kid. Beautiful entry.

    My husband’s name was Mark, he died,he was very young. I went to his grave often. I began to realize a monarch butterfly was always near when I visited. I began to connect the visit with the butterfly. What was he trying to say? Well this was before I knew I had Graves, our children were young, very young. What I witnessed told me it doesn’t end here. That there will be more. I believe we need to know not to give up. Live this life best we can, in some way its hard for everyone. No one promised life would be easy. What were we expecting? Just live best you can. That’s all.

    This is beautiful. It is amazing to start having more awareness around us… Rachel Naomi Remen M.D. brings up in her work that we are always whole- but we have to figure it out and heal each other along the way. I feel that is what we are doing here with each other! Thank you for helping us see that too by sharing your poignant story! And there are always more. Each day there will be more for all of us.

    Sending you lots of love and healing hugs!
    xx
