Dear Thyroid – Joke’s on you!

Dear Thyroid,

So it seems you thought, you could just go ahead and take over my body. Growing your cancer where no one could find you while packing on the pounds, weakening my knees and destroying all my hard work. Well, guess what? THE JOKE IS ON YOU!  Where are you now, dear thyroid? Oh that’s right, you have been cut out, cut up and thrown in a biohazard container where you will shrivel up and die, alone.

You had severely underestimated your opponent, me.  You may not have heard (because I usually only say this to myself) but I AM THE STRONGEST WOMAN ALIVE!  This mantra, I created decades ago to get myself through anything life could throw my way. It has worked until this age of 38 and will continue to work for many future decades.  Oh, silly thyroid – I will give you, your ounce of credit for the efforts to derail my train because I really didn’t see this one coming, bravo!

However, do not mistake my tears for defeat, they are filled with anger, determination and pure punk defiance to your attempts to hurt me. Physical pain? I can take it. Emotional pain? You never met my friends and family.  A scar? Just another reason to add to my tattoos.  Radioactive iodine? Not a fan but bring it on, my husband could use a few days off.

I have thought this through for the past several months and have come to a conclusion.  I really don’t need you, dear thyroid, trying to bring me down all the time.  That is not in your job description, in fact, you did the exact opposite of what you were supposed to do for me!  So why should I feel bad for you, again? Uh, exactly.

I shall deliver this farewell to you, dear thyroid, with the help of one of the world’s greatest defiant people – the late great Johnny Cash!  Are you listening? Ok…

Dear Thyroid,

“My name is Sue, how do you do? You’re gonna die!”  Have fun in the incinerator, bitch.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Delaney

  4. Sue, thank you for sharing this letter with us! You’re so inspiring. I’m so proud of you for deciding to not allow cancer to control you and your life. I’m so inspired by the way you allow yourself to cry those tears and feel that anger–I think those emotions are an important part of the healing process. Remember that you are not walking this road alone. We’re here for you the entire journey

Docs say I am considered cancer free, as well as thyroid free, and will not require RAI treatment!

Suck it, TC because I win and you lose! Love, Suzanne
