So glad to find your site. I think the first thing we thyroidies face is the drs. get us to the diagnosis and drop us off there. It's "mysterious and wierd", my dr. confessed. Ever since I've been my own science project and found things that work for me. I'm on 50mcg of levothyroxine, which I take early in the morn 20-30 minutes before coffee. Mainly, I had to quit taking vitamins within 8 hours of my thypill, because it effed me all up. I eat protien, vegies and fruits (monsantofree) like it's goining out of style, and avoid bread, wannabe grains, and anything slightly related. I picked up Jillian Michael's 30 day shred/ 20 minutes (key) a day video. 2 months later I am seeing muscle tone and a trimmer figure. Honestly, I was a waif before hypothyroidism, now I enter the brick shithouse faze, and I like it. I'm on a mission to lose 25 pounds, I remain hopefull yet realistic. I love and accept my body even if I stay at 165 forever.
I know how I got myself into this mess. I ignored that little voice, I took on too much, I ran on empty, in a pressure cooker of stress. Forgot all about self care. Drank too much wine. yada yada yada No wonder my body turned on me, at least something was conscience while I was away.

Sarah,

thanks so much for your comment!

i like alot of what you've said here and can definitely agree. and first of all, anyone who knows what Monsanto is is my kind of woman. :)

i think the things you're doing to be more well sound fabulous. you're listening to your body, you're taking it seriously, and you understand that DRs usually give us a pill and then shuffle us outta there asap.

looking back, we see so many areas we went wrong and chose the wrong things for our bodies. we can't beat ourselves up. we can only work and move forward. you sound like you're doing that flawlessly. good for you!!

Weight loss program-er,

thank you for reading. :)

okay, i have to say that i completely agree with alot of what you've said here. specifically, i am a huge proponent of disease prevention. huge. and i think that's where mainstream medicine goes wrong alot of the time -- they only care when it's broken. however, i personally wasn't raised to be concerned about preventing disease and making healthy lifestyle choices, so i know that although my genetics predispose me to disease, my lifestyle probably got me in this predicament.

when it comes to the book choices, i think it's important to know that weight loss, for me, is _always_ secondary to health. our culture is so consumed with losing weight and using any means necessary to lose weight, but rarely on how healthy the body actually is. so that's why focusing on eating healthy should, in my opinion, always come first, because chances are that weight loss will automatically follow as a result. and i like to think that these books promote the same ideas.

however, as women, many of us grow up with the idea that our self-worth is wrapped up in how we look. so when a disease makes us gain weight by no fault of our own, we feel less than human and less than worthy because we think we're perceived by others as not as valuable. and no, i don't think losing weight is the cure for this. that's why i like to focus on being wholly healthy. so when we start eating foods that _aren't_ catchy/faddy/diet-y, we don't have to focus so much on losing weight as on eating to _nourish_ our bodies.

thanks again for your comment and readership! ;)

Jody,

you're not at ALL a slow learner! i mean, we never hear about food actually affecting more than our waistlines, so how could anyone be expected to know anything about food intolerances unless it directly affects them in some great way. you know? i give you credit for putting two and two together. i know your health is gonna improve -- even if only in some small way -- just because you're being so attentive to your body! let me know what you come up with -- if you figure out anything specific on what works for you. to me, it's just so revolutionary because as much as we often times (or, i'm not gonna lie... for me, it's a whole hell of alot of the time) feel like prisoners to our bodies and have very little control. perhaps, some of us, in reality, have more control over our bodies than we think. you know? for me, that's a hopeful message that i hold onto so i don't go crazy everyday. ;)

Great article! It looks that i'm the only man here-(thats why i don't understand and ask stupid questions) but i'm wondering why people in general are curing things when they are "broken"already-instead of working on prevention-by thaking a right mind set and live life in direction to be satisfied all the time?

I know that weight issues are women's obsession(i'm married)but what i try to say is enjoy life-do sports, learn new things.....don't let loosing weight become your life moto-cause you will enter a vicious circle of being slave of your own obsession.

Anyway i like when woman has curves and i know many "slightly overweight" womans with more sexapeal than lot of others with "perfect" figures.

I wouldn't say that you are what you eat-i would say you are -how you feel you are-loosing weight and getting to scientific about it can get you just deeper unsatisfied with your self.

Sorry if i'm writing nonsense-was not my intention, but i have a lot of expirience with weight issues and bottom line is-simplest answer is usually the best one-enjoy life and your weight won't be issue to think about anymore.
Thanks!

Thanks Liz,

I also LOVE books and have recently become a little obsessed with food in the thyroid/intolerance sense - took a long time to realize runny nose, headaches, tummy aches etc aren't just 'my little oddities' - yes - I know, call me a slow learner :). Thanks for these suggestions - do you have any more recommendations?

KR,
Jody.

P.S. I've never been a trainer or anything like that but I second Cyndi's opinion on weights! It's the fastest way to make yourself feel powerful inside and out - and if you're eating properly and not on steroids - highly unlikely to bulk up like a man - just get lean :)
