According to the American Cancer Society…

1, 529,560: The estimated number of new cancer cases in the United States in 2010

1,500: The estimated number of people who will die each day from cancer in the United States in 2010

$263.8 billion: The estimated cost of cancer in 2010

44, 670: The estimated number of new thyroid cancer patients in the United States in 2010. 75% of these new patients will be women. More than 80% will be below the age of 65.

5%: The percentage of thyroid cancer patients whose cancer will metastasize beyond the thyroid

1.0%: The increase in death rate for thyroid cancer per year since 1983

There is no way around it—numbers matter. We are halfway through thyroid cancer awareness month but we are not even close to being done raising awareness. EVERY VOICE MAKES A DIFFERENCE. We NEED your help to change these numbers. We want the incidence of thyroid cancer to decrease. We want the death rate for thyroid cancer to decrease. We want these numbers to change but we cannot do it alone.

We need you to get involved. If you are a thyroid cancer survivor, are you participating in our blog tour? What about our celebration of survivorship? Have you shared your story? For everyone—have you signed the petition to have thyroid cancer recognized as a public health issue? Have you reminded friends and family to “check your neck?” Have you requested your free awareness bands? Are you wearing your disease on your sleeve?

It is still not too late to get involved. Do your part. Help us change the numbers. This movement is not going to end on September 30^th. Although thyroid cancer awareness month will be over, we will keep going. Make the decision now to get involved and make a difference.
