In list format, Melissa unearthed 9-sources of fluoride exposure that many of us might not be aware of. When you read the column; you’ll learn that processed cereals, non-organic wine and grapes, to name a few, all have fluoride. Melissa also shares the impetus for her quest to find fluoride. It’s a fantastic read.

As a dental hygienist that is NOT a gung-ho fluoride advocate, I loved your list. It shows how easily it could be for levels of fluoride to get out of hand in the body. Children are exposed is too many ways when you look at your list.
I will be looking for more ways to eliminate the fluoride in my world. Carifree.com makes fluoride free toothpaste that I am going to invest in.
I have to use hydrated aluminum in a mist spray when polishing my patients’ teeth. The particle size is so small that I am ingesting it when I do that part of my treatment (even though I wear a mask), 8 times a day. There has to be a fluoride side effect from that too. That could have contributed to my 50 lb weight increase since starting this job 2.5 years ago.
I do need a water filter. Any inexpensive suggestions? I drink a LOT of water daily and I need to be aware of the fluoride I am getting from that too.

for the water filter– we got a Berkey filter. Not cheap, but it is a good filtration system, and we figured it would “pay for itself” after about a year of use when compared to buying filtered water. It consists of two stainless steel chambers, fitted together, a lid, a spigot, and a choice of filters. We got the black filters and some post-filters. The black filters remove almost all the “nasties” that can be in your water– particulates, “germs”, large molecules, and Cl; the post filters were required for us because our water is fluoridated– those remove fluoride and also radioactive particles (a problem in some well water and water from underground springs).
It is gravity fed, so doesn’t require power, and if there is only a contaminated water supply (beyond the fluoridation…), it is able to provide clean water without the need to boil or add chemicals to it. Amazon seems to have the best prices for the system and the filters; also, if you live in Calif… it may be the only way to get one– the Berkey company can’t deliver to Calif addresses because of some idiotic regulation that requires filters to fit under the sink (despite being labeled as a counter top filter…).

Kaytee, thank you for the great detailed information. I need to get one for the shower at least and kitchen sink. It just occurred to me I will need something for outside water also. I plan on building some raised planter beds this spring and I don’t want to water the veggies with tap water. Is the filter you talk about a whole house filter?

No, it’s a counter top filter– the people, the dogs and the beta use it, the green babies have to deal with tap water, although I try to blow off as much chlorine as possible by filling a plastic trash barrel and letting it sit overnight before using. We pour the tap water into the top, and wait for it to filter through to the bottom– holds about 3 gal. There are larger ones by the same company, and also smaller ones for smaller spaces and/or camping trips and such. I don’t think they make a whole house filter because of t he way the filter works. We got this one because it doesn’t rely on electrical power, so it will work even during an outage and because it doesn’t waste water as reverse osmosis filters do (those throw away half or more of the water going into the filter)– important in a “water restrictions” area which has has power grid brown- and blackouts in the recent past.
Our shower filter is a Rainshow’r CQ-1000. It doesn’t remove fluoride, but does take out chlorine and that has helped a lot.
