We didn’t announce this week’s word for acrostic poetry, which we’re doing right now… OVER. We are writing acrostic poems for a reason. Our goal is to make the invisible illness week’s list, among other awareness objectives. We want to educate and spread awareness through literary mediums using your words. Your words not only make up this community; they inspire, educate, heal, and mend fractured hearts, and extend permission to be angry, if we feel angry. Your words collectively are an ongoing epistolary series about the reality of thyroid disease and thyroid cancer.

If Dear Thyroid was written by a few people; would that be a true representation of thyroid disease or thyroid cancer? I don’t think so. Rather – we don’t think so.

Submit a Dear Thyroid letter; whether it’s your first or your 50th. Write it and share it.

Submit an acrostic poem this week using the word: OVER

Submit an article about something related to your disease that you want other thyroid patients to be aware of.

Send a missive (in comments) and remind each author that they aren’t alone; that their disease won’t win and that they are worth fighting for. Remind each other that we aren’t alone. We’re in this together.

Love,

Katie

To Know you is to Hate you, written by Faith, is a letter that encapsulates the impact thyroid disease has on a relationship; the guilt; the anguish and the love. Please check it out and send love in comments or share your story with Faith.

Debra says:

Faith,

Consider yourself very lucky that you have a loving, supportive husband. Thyroid disease destroyed my marriage because my husband gave up on me. He didn’t want to deal with me being sick every day. He hates me now, and why, because by no fault of my own, i became ill. I will never understand how somebody can blame you for getting sick. I feel like it was all my fault, and i feel guilty every day of my life now. There are so many people who don’t understand how horrible this disease can make you feel. I guess if somebody leaves you because you are ill, they never really cared about you in the first place

Keira’s acrostic poem using the word FANTASTIC was, in a word, FIERCE and FEARLESS.

Kiera is Fanfuckingtastic!

We were lucky enough to have another acrostic poem today, written by lovely Lori. Once again, she chronicled the gut wrenching, impossible realities of this disease; and she did it so eloquently and honestly.

Here is my poem submission for today, Tuesday, 10/26/2010:

    Despair sets in
    Darkness covers me

    Hair releasing itself
Rests awkwardly on shoulders and back

    Energy
    Usually a faint memory

    Memory
    What is that

    Aching body imprisoning
    active thoughts

    Dreams unaccomplished
    Over
    Wishes set aside

    Holding on with everything inside
    Still not measuring up
    Anxious

Forcing a smile on my lips
    Inwardly the tears flow

    Heart sinks
    Moods change

    Struggle to be positive
    Negatives attack

    Tired
    But pressing on

Only you can take an otherwise energetic woman full of
Vivaciousness, and bring her to her knees
Eventually you will desist because in
    Reality I WILL WIN.
