Twenty-Seventh Entry: Thyroid Literary Contest – Three Words of Encouragement
Fuck You, Thyroid
You’re wondering how this can be encouraging. From a person who has dealt with two surgeries and a cancer diagnosis in the past 3 months (and did I mention I’m not even 21 yet?), the phrase “fuck you, thyroid” has been the best thing that ever happened to me. Whenever something is going wrong- whether it be symptoms, insurance problems, medication, or just the profundity of it all- I say “fuck you, thyroid” and get back to my busy no-time-for-cancer life. Ok, so this doesn’t ALWAYS work, but it is ALWAYS worth the effort!
So, for those mornings that you wake up feeling like you took 20 shots of vodka the night before and know you were stone-cold sober, “fuck you, thyroid”
… for the days when you put on sweatpants because nothing else fits, “fuck you, thyroid”
… for the headaches that make you want to put yourself into a sensory deprivation room for the rest of your life, “fuck you, thyroid”
… for the number of times a day that you shake out your arms and legs to try to avoid having to take more tums, “fuck you, thyroid”
… for the number of awkward emotional breakdowns you have had in front of people you are actually not that close to, “fuck you, thyroid”
It’s going to get better. And even if it’s not, harboring anger about the situation doesn’t help. So, the best advice I can give is to let it out. Let it out, laugh about it, cry about it (but not too much). And, hey, if it works for you, “fuck you, thyroid”. It certainly works for me.

I say “fuck you, thyroid” all the time. This is perfect. It’s honest. It’s healing. It’s real.
Echoing Keira’s sentiments, I say, “fuck you, thyroid” all the time. Rage is as cathartic as tears and laughter. Releasing the anger is healthy.
You go, girl. Release that anger!

Love your attitude Elyse!!! I’ve said fuck you thyroid so many times…maybe thru my tears, then when they’re gone, I had to laugh at myself! And can TOTALLY related to emotional breakdowns in front of people you aren’t very close too…impossible to explain to someone that’s never felt that. I’ve had cancer twice before and it’s returned again…right now wondering when it will advance. So I’m right there with ya girl!!! Hang in there & tell the freakin’ hormones, cancer, emotions, extra weight, brain fog & crappy feeling in general..fuck you…and on we go :)))))) Take care of u hun!!
