Patients Doctors

Below is a list of doctors recommended by thyroid patients. Dear Thyroid doesn’t endorse doctors, we leave that to thyroid patient advocates such as Mary Shomon, among others. However, patients with thyroid diseases and thyroid cancers have wonderful doctors. Because patients know what they seek treatment wise, we wanted an opportunity to share doctors that other patients have seen and endorse.

If you have a recommended provider that you’d like to see on this website, please post your doctor in comments (below) with their information and a blurb about why you enjoy working with that doctor.

From the patient: “Dr. Kundra is a published,   Washington University trained doctor with priveleges at Barnes-Jewish. She is also well informed about the role of reverse t3, and has prescribed Cytomel…she’s more expensive, however, but I have to say she’s the best allopathic doctor I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a bunch before being diagnosed with multiple autoimmune diseases.

HAMDEN, CT
Name: Dr. Susan Wang
Address: 60 Washington Ave
Location: Hamden, Ct. 06518
Phone 203 248 4362
No Website: Patient Grades

From the patient: “Listens well, explains things well, willing to try something a bit different, and also to explore the idea that if we can’t blame the thyroid for everything, then we should be figuring out what is to blame rather than just shrugging it off.  What I really liked is that she finally said that not all her patients are the same. Also told me to experiment carefully with my medication a bit and see if it helped. I felt that she and I had a partnership in trying to help me get even more better, rather than contenting herself with getting rid of the worst symptoms.

She has an associate, Dr. Lang. I have never met him but know one of his patients and also have spoken with others about him. They think very highly of him. I can’t give my own opinion.  Same phone and address.”

I am very pleased to finally find a doctor who sits down and takes time to go over everything without feeling like your rushed. She answers questions in a fashion you can understand.
She goes by symptoms as well as blood testing results, not guided by just TSH results. She wants to keep track of what the antibodies are doing so if they raise, we can slow them down.
She has taken the time to explain how to choose a good supplements that the body can use, next we look to see if anything I use to clean or cosmetics are contributing to how I feel. The best statement yet has been “we won’t do anything you’re not comfortable doing”. She is very caring and is very willing to share what she knows with me. She will ask me to research certain items, then we talk about the research. I feel like I finally have a partner to help me feel better. The office staff is always pleasant and helpful as well. The office has several other naturopaths so if she isn’t there I can still be treated on time. They also consult with each other to provide the best care possible for their patients. (They accept Cigna so there is no additional blood draw fee but you do have to plan on the days the technician is in the office. )

    • Robin says:

Thank you Kathy / Phoenix, AZ!
I reside in Gilbert and have been looking for a recommendation for a naturopathic physician for my newly diagnosed Hashimoto’s. I appreciate a new direction source and it is helpful to know that they accept Cigna. Thank you!

METRO WASHINGTON DC / NORTHERN VIRGINIA

    FROM: Suzanne Arlington, VA

    Roy W. Langley MD FACP
    Northern VA Endocrinologists
    Suite 502
    3020 Hamaker Ct
    Fairfax, VA 22031
    703-849-8440

Dr. Langley and all of his associates are amazing! Dr. Langley, himself, makes all his own phone calls about test results. I called the day before my 2nd surgery and left him a voicemail about “how much synthroid should I take after this?” He called me back the same day. The first question he always asks me, “How do you feel?” and then draws blood. They do their own biopsies and have their own pathologist, in the room during the biopsy.
I cannot say enough about this practice!

Does anyone know of a GREAT Dr. in southern California?

    • nancyk1970 says:

I lived in Southern California for years. I am a nurse and worked with Dr T.C Diaz (endo), he is in Corona. He has been a friend of mine for almost 20 years. He is great to his patients, he LISTENS to them. If I still lived in California I would have him treat my thyroid disease.

After suffering for the past 4 years with hypothyroidism and several doctors, I finally found a doctor that would LISTEN

    • Char2010 says:

The pamphlet from his practice states, “holistic, compassionate healthcare for the entire family. His special interests are alternative and integrated medicine;Women’s health Nutritional medicine”.

He asked me what medicine did “I” want to be on? He believes different patients do well on different medications. He does not believe in a cookie cutter method of treatment. He will prescribe Synthroid, Levoxyl, Armour, Naturethroid, Westhroid, Cytomel, Compounded thyroid… whatever works best for the individual patient and what the patient wants to take.

He asked me when “I” wanted my labs checked? He will check not only my TSH, but my free T’s too! Also, he will adjust medications not only by a number from a lab value BUT based on your symptoms.

He asked when “I” wanted to come in for a follow up. He respected me being a healthcare professional and what “I” had to offer him.

As a side note, he studied under the direction of Dr. David Brownstein.

    • Tina says:

Char2010, he ACTUALLY listened to you??? I have been through so many doctors too and they would barely listen and then never really talk to me about options/risks with the various interventions. I just need a doctor I can trust…one who is in the field to actually HELP me as the patient. Will Dr. Im do that?

      • char2010 says:

        Tina,
I had been through 1 family doctor and 2 endocrinologists before seeing Dr IM. I have been with him for a year now and so glad I found him. He truely is a compassionate dr and practices holistic medicine. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Any recommendations of who or who not to see in the area. Am willing to drive to Santa Fe? Just moved and the thought of trying to find a doc just drains me.

        • Heather says:

I just started seeing an excellent endocrinologist – Dr. Terlecki. I don’t know yet (I’ve only seen her once so far) if she’ll prescribe Armour or not. Her appointments normally run late – I waited an hour past my appointment time to see her, but then she spent an hour with me. She also called me at 7:30 that night to give me my blood test results. She’s very thorough and explains things well. You might want to call her office and see if she prescribes Armour – 247-2141

        • Teresa says:

I am also looking for a great endo that can deal with post Thyroid cancer and menopause. I’ve exhausted many in ABQ, I’m disappointed thus far. I’m seeing Terry Edwards MD next to see how he is. I briefly interviewed him and he seems to be knowledgeable
In the meantime, stay tuned Albuquerque, there is a Thyroid Cancer support group starting up in March! Yeah!

        • Sarah S says:

Teresa – do you mind sharing who you have seen in ABQ so I can scratch them off my list. Thanks

  12. Mary Jo says:

    HI Brenda
I’m in Chicago too- have an appointment with and Endo at Rush which I just know is going to be another disappointment:( I have Hashi’s and my thyroid is the size of a lemon, poking out of my neck on the right side. I’m just glad it’s fall and I can wear scarves again. The worst part is not being able to work. Im a therapist and can barely focus during sessions. I’m in so much pain.
    Chicago docs, anyone? Please?
    Mary Jo

  14. lisa says:

Can anyone recommend a doc in dallas tx?

    • Lindy says:

      Lisa,
i think I might be on the right track after many endo’s.
Had blood drawn after talking on the phone and then filling out questionnaire he sent me.
Checking everything and he only handles hormones and thyroid. I did test on Friday and will see him with the results on Thursday, so theres no waiting and going back and forth.
He even gives you his cell number. Very caring.
His name is David Bonfessuto in Las Colinas 214-335-5870.
      hope that helps!

  15. Marta520 says:

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a genius thryoid doc in South Florida?

Looking for a masterful diagnostician who treats symptoms vs just lab tests and likes Armour.

    Thanks.

    • Amber says:

Hello Marta, I know it has been a long time since your post. I also live in South Florida. Did you have success finding a great doctor here? I am also looking for someone who will treat me based on symptoms, look at all of the labwork, and likes armour. This Synthroid is slowly killing me.

      • Amber says:

In case someone comes looking in the future, I want to recommend a great thyroid doctor in South Florida: Dr. Jeffrey Dach (www.drdach.com). It has only been a little over a month since I started seeing him and taking the natural thyroid medication. Dr. Dach also found and is correcting a vitamin b12 deficiency. I feel so much better already! There is no comparison to the way I felt on September 26 when I wrote my original post and the way I feel now. My family, friends, and coworkers are even noticing a difference in me!

        • Sarah h says:

Ambet, thank you for this update. I am living I Italy (I’m American) and am looking to find a great dr to treat my HIGHLY symptomatic Hasimoto with natural hormones. Am planning a trip back to Florida (where we are from) to find the care like this. Thank you for your posts. Are you still pleased with this doctor?

        • June says:

Thank you for the suggestion, I was diagnosed with Hashimotos back in October, they gave me Synthroid, and I gained more weight, lost more hair, lost my sex drive, constipation increases, dry skin, depression, even more sleeplessness, fatigue, and hating being anywhere with lower temps than 85.. Today I left crying because I asked to switch to Armour, and they said no. They said I’d have to see their Endo doctor, but that he thinks the same thing anyways. Nice kick to the curb these doctors not treating the patient, just fixing the lab tests. I live down the street from the doctor you recommended, I’m going to make a visit tomorrow.

  16. […] Dear Thyroid is a unique brand of thyroid support. 99% of this site is written by and for patients with thyroid diseases and cancers, and their families. They provide a list of thyroid patient recommended doctors. […]

  17. Cheri says:

My endo whom I had just started seeing is moving out of the area. I wasn’t that impressed with her anyway. Now I am looking for a new doc to work with me on my Hashi’s with multi-nodular goiter. Any recommendations in the Green Bay, WI area? Even Appleton, WI? Please help!!! I had just started Armour thyroid about 2 months ago, so at a critical point trying to get levels right and start feeling better.

  18. Cheri says:

Just a little background. It might sound misleading when I said I started Armour 2 months ago. I had been on levothyroxine before that. I’ve been struggling with my thyroid for 15 years now. I saw and endo for my original diagnosis then was treated by my family doctor, then just went to an endo and found out my thyroid is enlarged again and had needle biopsies done on the nodules that had grown again. I convinced her to try armour since I had heard so many people did better on that.

    • Adina says:

I was on natural thyroid for a long time, and in theory I like it better and would recommend people to try it to see if that works better for their body! But after being forced onto Synthroid (when there was a halt in production of natural thyroid medication a few years back), I actually found that it was much more stabilizing. I did also try the levothyroxine, which is much cheaper, but it actually made me feel “off.” So if you are on the Armour and it does not do the trick, you may want to try the non-generic form. Good Luck!

  19. Karen says:

Does anyone know of a good endocrinologist (to treat thyroid) in Northeast Ohio?

    • nancyk1970 says:

      Hi Karen,

I too am looking for a M.D in N.E. Ohio. I live close to Akron/ Canton. I am a nurse and have yet to find a Primary MD since mine closed his doors a few months ago. Not too impressed with the Endo’s in the Canton area. Will keep looking, if you have found one, or know of a good physician in the Northeastern Ohio area, please let me know.

      Thank you!!
      Nancy

Looking for an endo in Charlotte, NC who will prescribe Armor! Please advise, thanks!

    • Kyle says:

Also looking for a doc (internist or family preferred, but endo is okay) who will prescribe Armour or similar in Charlotte, NC!

      • Kristen says:

I am seeing one this week – Dr. Deborah Matthew (Signature Wellness near the Arboretum). The compound pharmacy in Ballantyne recommended her and the patient care coordinator said that both she and her NP prescribe Armour.

  21. Jennifer says:

Desperately looking for a dr or np in tallahassee, fl that will prescribe armour or will treat my hypo symptoms – not treat by test results. Thanks!

  22. Marina says:

I had a great experience with a MD doctor who was certified at American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM). They specialize in all types of hormonal imbalances including thyroid and adrenals, prescribe T3 and get results quickly, however their services may not be covered by medical insurance.

    • Betsy says:

Marina, where do you live? You said:

and I’m looking for a top notch endo in the city of Chicago..been on levothyroxin for a zillion years, am always in normal ranges, but am not losing weight and am tired a LOT. Want to check into the lionthyroxine or armor..

  23. Lynn says:

    CALIFORNIA-BAY AREA Dr Kenneth Rebong
16375 Monterey Rd Suite A, MOrgan Hill, Ca
    408-778-5090
I saw Dr Rebong when I was on my “death bed” Synthroid (T4 only) for 25 years and I was hitting Peri-menopause. He had me do a Saliva Test, Blood Work, put me on a Vitamin regimen and this was after spending so much time listening and trying to figutre out what was the core problem for me. He is AWESOME!! He put me on COMPOUNDED Thyroid and I couldnt be happier. I have my life back!

  24. Margaret Trebing says:

Does anyone know of a good doctor in Southern New Jersey, or the Philadelphia area? My husband has severe hypothyroid symptoms and the two endocrinologists we’ve seen so far were useless. Thanks so much.

    • Jeces says:

      Hi Margaret-

I have also been searching in the Philly area. Any luck?

      • Sue M says:

Anyone know of a good thyroid doc in Philly area? I have hypo thyroid (Hashimoto disease). I’ve been to a few -can’t seem to find anyone really good. My “numbers” are good but I don’t have as much energy as I usually do and I can only gain weight no matter how little I eat. I heard good things about Dr Popii at Lankenau but since I have seen Dr El Haij (who was just OK), I wanted to switch but they won’t let me!!!

  25. psycho thyroid says:

I am looking for a provider in or near Anchorage, AK who will either prescribe Armour or cytomel. And I don’t want to hear any suggestions about some provider you’ve not seen personally please! I’ve had someone comment on a provider they’ve not gone to themselves, was quite annoying.

  26. Melody says:

Desperately looking for an Endocrinologist in Connecticut since my thyroid was removed four years ago. Can’t get any doctors to test anything other than my TSH which is inadequate. Now have a heart issue that a cardiologst believes is caused by the Levothyroxine and may be causing me issues with my adrenal gland.

Health keeps deteriorating – need an Endocrinologist ASAP. Central Connecticut would be the best location.

  27. Tammy says:

Anyone who of a good thyroid doctor in Georgia could be as far as Atlanta as I live about an hour from there? Thanks

    • Phillip says:

      Tammy,
If you still haven’t found a good thyroid doc you should try Michael Milton in Cumming. He sees thyroid patients from all over the world, inherited much of his thyroid practice from a now deceased endo guy who also specialized in diagnosing thyroid inbalance. His name was Coddington, and he too saw patients from all over the world-specialized in diagnosing thyroid imbalance with a reflex test, of all things. Haven’t been to Milton lately, but he used to sell me bottles of 500 tabs of 60 mg (1 grain) armour tablets in his office for $50.00-it would last me for well over a year. That was before armour was reformulated-I’m sure things are much different. If you go to the site for best Thryoid docs, Atlanta/Ga. you will find far more recommendations for him than anyone else. New patients are evaluated for an initial cost of $350.00, and theres a wait to see him. Good Luck,
      Phillip

  28. Mark Stanley says:

  29. Tammy says:

    • Kim says:

Did you ever find a good doc near Atlanta, GA??? I am looking for one that will listen and try other meds!!

      • Tammy says:

I heard of a Dr.Milton but it takes 3 months to get an appointment with him and it’s very expensive! I just wish I could find a regular Dr.who would take me off this Synthroid!! I feel fat and miserable all the time with absolutely no energy!! If anyone knows of a good Dr.around Lagrange,Ga or near Newnan,Ga anywhere close Pleaseeeeeee let me know E-mail me at Tammymazzola@bellsouth.net Thanks

        • Melody says:

          Tammy,
Did you ever find a good doctor close to the Newnan (or south of Atlanta) area? I have been searching for someone for some time. A couple years ago I saw an Endo in Newnan (if you search thyroid doctors in Newnan, her name comes up a lot), and she was dreadful. After learning that I have PCOS, family history of autoimmune disorders (including hypothyroidism) and a ton of symptoms, and although she acknowledges some enlargement on an US and by feeling, she saw that my TSH was borderline and dismissed me. Instead of looking at the whole picture of my health and helping me, she basically told me I was overweight and needed to exercise and eat better, or I was going to get diabetes! Never mind the fact that, despite being tired and having also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia around the same time, I run an extremely busy life filled with family, working, and volunteering. I get plenty of exercise and I am very particular about my diet (though I am generally a light eater). My GP just moved on to something else, unfortunately, or I would turn to her for more help. And side note, why is it so hard to find thyroid doctor that will take insurance?!

      • Laurie says:

There is a good GP clinic in Lawrenceville, GA called The Doctor’s Inn. It’s located at 1569 Buford Dr, Lawrenceville, GA 30043 Phone: 770-277-1424

The docs there are smart, they are people smart, and can see things their patients may not see. I went in because I was having trouble getting started on running again. (long story) After talking with me they ran some tests and figured out that I have hypothyroidism. I didn’t even tell them about most of the symptoms. They were still able to see what I couldn’t. Highly recommend them.

  30. miriam says:

I am looking for a knowledgable doc to help me with my Hashimoto’s here in Florida (central).

    • Kim says:

Did you hear of any contacts in the Central FL area? thx

    • Pat says:

It may be a bit of a drive, but Dr. Hammond at 4CARE Medical in Palm Bay is definitely worth it. It usually only takes a week or two at the most to get in to see him. I’ve posted his info in another post below.

  31. Heidi says:

Hi, is there anyone out there from North Dakota who has a good thyroid doctor? I am currently on NDT but not tolerating it well, and my Dr. insists I am overdosed (rather than struggling with RT3 issues) even though I still have some big thyroid symptoms. I don’t know who to turn to.

  32. Nina says:

Hi I am looking for a doctor in the Columbia Missouri area who will prescribe a natural thyroid. Any help is appreciated.

  34. Rochelle says:

Hi I am looking for a doctor in Bakersfield CA since my Endo has told me to seek treatment elsewhere because I questioned his treatment and wanted him to treat my symptoms not just what my labs are saying. Thanks!

    • Amy says:

Hi Rochelle, have you found anyone in the Bakersfield area yet? I a desperately searching for a dr to help with my hypothyroidism. Amy

      • Rochelle says:

Hi Amy, I think I finally found a doctor in Bakersfield that is a T-3 believer and listens to your symptoms! Her name is Jasleen Duggal. I have only seen her once and she already put me on cytomel to help with all the symptoms of hypothyroidism and I can’t wait to go back in October. She knows her stuff and I didn’t even have to bust out all my research and notes that I took with me because she knew how to treat me. The only draw back is she seems to run behind and her staff seems to be unorganized but other than that she was awesome! Are you on Facebook? If you are check out Thyroid sexy and Mary. Shomon, I have learned how to be your own advovate and how to get the best treatment for your health.

        • Amy says:

Wow Rochelle, thank you soooo much! I am so excited! This really could be a life changer! I will be making a call today! Thank you again!

  35. Emily says:

Any great doctors in the San Antonio, TX area? Thanks!!!

  36. Lilly says:

Hi. I am looking for a good doctor in the RI/MA area who will treat the person, not just the labs. Thanks

    • Mak says:

Hi Lilly– Did you find someone in MA/RI area? I am in Boston and and searching as well. If you find someone, please let me know and I will do the same. Thanks, Mak

    4CARE Medical Center
590 Malabar Road SE, Suite 7
    Palm Bay, FL 32907
    (321)676-3535

I had been ill for over 17 years after getting my thyroid taken out. I had seen many doctors in five states, all telling me that T4 was working well and that my symptoms were from some other problem. Dr. Hammond took the time to order T4/FT3 blood tests and determined that I wasn’t converting T4 to T3 correctly. Due to Celiac disease, I couldn’t take Cytomel, so he prescribed Armour. Eight months later, I’m healthy for the first time in decades, and am no longer reacting to gluten.

  40. Jules says:

Anyone know of an endocrinologist or other doctor in Cincinnati, Ohio that also works with bioidentical (not pellets)? I have just been diagnosed with hasimotos.

  41. Amber says:

Hi Sarah! I am still very pleased with Dr. Dach. I can’t say enough good things about him and his office staff. They were patient when I needed help, are ready and willing to answer questions, and I have even received two follow up calls from them to see how I am progressing. Dr. Dach has given me the gift of health and feeling like myself again. I hope that you will be able to get your symptoms under control and I wish you all the best!

Looking for a good doctor in New York City for my Hashimoto’s. If anyone has suggestions, please pass them on. I am tired of being tired! and fat, and thinning hair, and having shortness of breath, etc etc.

Clear Lake/Friendswood TX: Dr. Charlie Chang=AWESOME!
He’s one of the best endo docs I have had. After testing, he wanted me to lower my dose from 175mcg to 150mcg. I did and felt fine. Retested and said I should go lower, so I went to 137mcg and started to get tired and cold all the time. I told him this and without question or hesitation he said the dose would go back up to 150mcg and we would reevaluate at my 1 yr visit, but call if anything changes and we would go back up to 175mcg. He takes his time and listens.

    Brooklyn NY: Dr. Vladimir Privman=GREAT!
My very first endo doc. 12 years ago. He was very informative and detail oriented. Everything was explained to me thoroughly.

    St. Louis, MO: DR. Veronikis=HORRIBLE!
Wouldn’t keep me at my dosage even after I told her what happened with Dr. Chang. Refused to refill my Rx at the current dose. When I told her about getting tired and cold she said it was because I was peri-menopausal. She said my dosage would lead to osteoporosis. When I pointed out my initial post-op bone scan and my 10 yr scan was unchanged and was told by my previous doctor it was perfect, she looked at the reports and blew it off. I would not recommend her to anyone.

  47. I direct an integrative medicine practice with a focus on natural thyroid replacement. For those in NC and SC interested in T4/T3 or T3 supplementation or replacement therapy we are accepting new patients.

  48. Teresa says:

    Hi Sarah,
Absolutely. In addition, we are forming a Thyroid support group in ABQ. We will have our first meeting
March. I’m not sure if we are going to do second Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. I’ll post it as soon as I know which day. That should be also be a great place for local information.
I’ve seen Ferraro, Terlecki, Edwards and Schade. I’m using my PA right now. I also went to Phx. but it’s too difficult long distance.

I am desperately searching for an integrative doc in the Las Vegas area that my insurance will cover. I have to have a primary care physician. I have Hashimoto’s and need to explore other treatment options. I know my medication needs changed; I can tell by my symptoms. It took me forever to get a good combination of doctors in my previous city, and now that I’ve moved, I’m starting all over.
